| Sympatico@MSN email problems
Any idea why smtphm.sympatico.ca would be giving me problems? I've tried following their upgrade guide several times, with failures each time. Of course my whole family is upgraded to these new servers, and none of them are able to send email's. We can receive email's just fine, but sending out seems to error out. I've enabled SSL and everything.
Anyone wanna give it a try? Thanks. |

| reply to cotam Meh, after trying various things, I've managed to fix it by using pop8.sympatico.ca (what I used to use before the upgrade). I still use pophm for incoming (which seems to work fine). Anyone else experiencing problems with smtphm? Guess I'll use this until it stops working |

@69.158.x.x | Oops, by using smtp8.sympatico.ca not pop8  |

@69.158.x.x | Yeah, I've seen a post about that while browsing through the forums. Problem is, I have no firewalls whatsoever, so it really didn't apply to me. I'd say the problem is on the server side, not mine. |

If you scan incoming and outgoing email for a virus...turn off the outgoing email scanning when you want to use smtphm.sympatico.ca. |

| I don't have any Norton products installed. Firewall nor Antivirus. Never knew Norton 2005 messes with it though, guess you learn something new every day. If it wasn't so bloated, I'd have it installed and possibly have that as my problem |

| Are you running any other Anti-Virus software that scans email on incoming and outgoing? If so, it's quite possible that the software you're using is also not capable of scanning with SSL.
Since many people have switched to the new platform and have no issues (including me), the problem is more likely on your end (most likely configuration).
What is the error message you get? Be sure to specify in your email client that your outgoing mail server requires authentication and provide it with your username/password information. |

@69.158.x.x | Am I supposed to use SSL with 25 as the port? or the default (465)? Either way, neither seem to work. Also, I'm not using any antivirus programs whatsoever. The setup seemed to work for about a week, and suddenly crapped out and no longer works. |

| Outgoing (smtphm.sympatico.ca) SSL is still port 25, incoming (pophm.sympatico.ca) SSL should be port 995.
What email client are you using? What error message do you get? Have you told your email client that your outgoing mail server (for smtphm.sympatico.ca) requires authentication (and supplied username/password)? |

| reply to cotam There are viruses/adware that cause connection problems. Virus producers like to create nasty programs to make you go around in circles looking for a problem. Do a scan of your system with an anti virus program and or spybot type of program...look for something causing the problem. |

| reply to cotam I had the same problems. Turns out it was my Anti-Virus program screwing up. I use AVG Free and it had to be configured for the non-standard setting that Sympatico/MSN now uses.
Also my MailWasher 2.0 program will no longer work with new settings. I will now have to upgrade to Mailwasher Pro due to Sympatico Changes

| reply to cotam Symantec Norton Antivirus does not support SSL connections. Here is a link to their KB article about it: »tinyurl.com/6lp2j
I have the same problem. Even disabling any kind of email antivirus scanning in Norton doesn't always work. I had to remove Norton to finally be able to send mail. I'm temporarily using AVG now. -- "Don't let your mouth get you into something your ass can't handle." |

| reply to cotam I just upgraded. I have no problems connecting via my email client (mail on OSX) but there is a problem with the Sympatico MSN email system. I cannot log into the web mail MSN Sympatico email. I have talked to Sympatico and they say they are working on fixing the problem.
The real downside to this is that the default spam filter that was set when the account was moved was set on "high". I am getting very little mail through my Sympatico account and I can't change the spam filter settings until Sympatico fixes the problem. I also sent and email to MSN about this and they determined that it was definately a Sympatico problem.
I would suggest that anyone who has not upgraded yet holds off until this problem is fixed.

| reply to Leonivek I really gotta start researching before I do things. I just upgraded my account. Am using OE as mail client...now I keep getting this error when I try to log in
Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'Sympatico', Server: 'pophm.sympatico.ca', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR command not implemented', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18
Disabled Norton Email Scanning. Didn't work. Guess I'll try geting rid of Norton and see if that works. Unless someone else has another solution? |

| reply to cotam I had trouble, too. Of course "tech support" was of no help. I use Thunderbird. I now have it working. Try this:
Set up outgoing SMTP as suggested, smtphm.sympatico.ca
Select TLS not SSL
Check mark for name and password. You'll be prompted for the password.
Of course, use your e-mail address as your name. |

| said by zenohalfway :Select TLS not SSL As xiphoidfugu mentioned, he uses Outlook Express, which doesn't have an option of TLS - only SSL.
As for Norton xiphoidfugu, if you are using the Internet Security package, you have to disable that as well since the Anti Spam filter attempts to scan your outgoing mail also. -- F*ckin' NHLPA - wrecking the game for all of us... |
