There's a LOT of wanabees out there trying to crack the low end of the portable DVD player market. You are seeing a lot of brands that you've never heard of before (i.e. Insignia, Initial), familiar names that are just now being licensed for consumer electronics goods (i.e. Polaroid, the brand I purchased for my wife), as well as the well established names which tend to cost 50-100% more for the same screen size.
To be honest the wife is very happy with the Polaroid 8" model; it was a great deal, looks and sound good too. What you need to focus on here is the warranty. The really cheap ones only have a 90 day parts warranty; if it dies, you might as well junk it and buy another one. More reputable companies will offer a more reasonable warranty period, such as ours which is one year parts and labor.
Caveat emptor (buyer beware) is oh so true. |
