block to software installation in kids computers?

we got a walkman MP3 for christmas, and my son install the cd and I can't beleive how bad the computer is now,the cd installed a bunch of spyware and all type of junk.
I want to setup win-xp so the OS won't allow to install software without my permission, there is any tip for that?

thanks.

First things first: get rid of the spyware that's on your system. Run SpyBot, AdAware, and possibly Tracks Eraser Pro (www.acesoft.net). Sit back and watch the mess pile up -- and then clean it.

As for the second thing I'm not too sure as my knowledge is limited, but try setting up your children on different user accounts with limited privelidges (sic), so nothing major is done unless it is authorized by the administrator (you) account.

Hope this helps,

Elefus

Agreed, Windows XP allows Administrator or Limited User from the control panel -> Users.

If you need a bit more flexibility, run MMC, Add Snap In -> Local Users and Groups.

Limited user account is the way to go. Make sure they don't get your password. Or image the disk and revert every now and again.

Some games do stop working however, or may need to be reinstalled (e.g, believe it or not the Age of Empire or Mythology series from MS NEEDS admin rights to run).

If you want help cleaning the system, you might want to check out the security forum FAQ: »Security »I think my computer is infected or hijacked. What should I do?

thanks guys,I removed a bunch of spyware with spybot.
Before christmas the pc was fine,I'm sure my boy got so excited for the mp3 player and Install the cd and click"yes" to averything.

I can't remove "180 search assistant" from the add/remove programs under the control panel.
Now the pc is usable.

thanks.,

If a Sony install disc is putting that type of crap on customers machines. I'm surprised we've not seen a bigger uproar yet.

Re: block to software installation in kids compute

He might also have gone looking for mp3s to download and those sites are rife with spyware, adware, and trojans.

Are you using IE? And while it may be patched it is no guarantee depending on what setting the little angel turned off. If it is unpatched.... hmmm... disaster awaits.

Sony might not be to blame.

You might want to follow all the steps in the FAQ (AV scans and AT and... I know it is long, but it is thorough) and post a hijack log in a new thread just to be sure.

I think I'm wrong about the spyware from the sony walkman cd installation.I shouldn't blame sony, ops!!
I installed the same cd in my pc and I was able to uninstall and I scanned with spybot and no problems it all.
The sony mp3 player came with a card with a pin # to download music from a sony web site,we never download music from web sites, only kazaalite and now newsgroups,I agree, downloading from web sites you just get virus and trojans.

This might sound strange but...

Use IE. Set it not to allow downloads, active-x, etc. etc. Then lock it using Group Policy so they cannot change the settings. That should do it.

You're using kazaalite and downloading unknown files from USENET and you wonder how you got spyware?!

Uh, yeah, I kind of doubt it was the CD...

Mei Guo Ren,the only time that I got a trojan, was when I downloaded a crack from a web site, before I got a virus from suprnova.org using BitTorrents, but that why we use antivirus, the virus was detected and deleted.
I feel very safe downloading from newsgroups, but you need to have antivirus and run anti spyware few times in the weeks.

Kazaalite is the single most notorious spyware installer on the planet. If spybot S&D is your only anti-spyware tool, you need to try some more-- there are many, many types of malware that Spybot S&D will not detect. It's a great tool, particularly for it's immunize function, but as a detector it leaves a lot to be desired. Try the free ad-aware SE or the free trial of Giant Anti-Spyware; I think you'll be surprised at how much Spybot doesn't find.

Re: block to software installation in kids compute

kazaa or kazaalite, it doesn't matter because it opens up your computer for other to dump their crap. He is right about Spybot, it's great but still not good enough. Run AdawareSE and another detections and I guarantee you will find at least 50% of what was missed. I personally like Pestpatrol, Adaware, Spybot, Giant, (some say Spysweeper is good), CWShredder, and Hijackthis. It may sound alot but that's is the only way to fully clean the crap off your system. Once a month I run at least 6 of these combined apps. Sounds alot but it doesn't take too long since my system is fast.
