home wireless network with 3 blocks or more range?

Hi, What is the best wireless setup (router, antenna, and type (a,b,or g) to set up a home system so I can access the internet from 3 blocks or so away. If home is a couple blocks from main street in a small town and I want to sit up at the local restaurant or bar and surf on my own home network. Also any suggestions for equipment, ballpark price for the setup, and any internet site where the equipment is located would be helpful Thanks.

I posted this last night but it showed up with the wrong subject line. The subject line changes when I hit the preview button. I also looked at old posts and read about omni antennas on the house but those appear to be limited to one direction and the beamwidth spread is unknown assuming I could point one towards main street. I am helping a friend who wants to do this since he has retired. thanks again.

well i am not sure exactly what you mean that you but for wireless distance use 802.11 G longer distance of 2.4GHz and i am sure you can add Booster devices to extend? Have access to your network from 3 blocks away from you house or set up a wireless network from 3 blocks away from your house at a restaurant to access it at home?

i just read same post on this forum and i understand now what your trying to say. Well you are going to need a 8011.G wireless network with some booster devices i am going a little over my head but someone here i am sure will confirm this. The thing is how are you going to set up the booster devices half way from your the main road?I don't think you will set it up at a neighbors house half way? maybe theres a simple solution but i though i would try and help you some what since no one has replied to your topic. I'll keep watching this post. I'll do some research here because i had a plan of doing something like that.

wireless bridge would be a good signal booster and reliable. your going to have to install them every 100 feet so that the signal can bounce from bridge to bridge. looks like it might be too much for you unless you are willing to try this.

I'm going to hurl with the sad advice I'm reading.
G protocol is longer distance? ummm NO. Please, if you don't know what your talking about, its better just to be quiet.

For the poster you have to better detail your requirements.
Is it, connect two sites via wireless?
Is it, provide wireless in a cafe/bar area?

etc, the more specific less generic, the better answers you will get.

home wireless network

Hi, my friend has internet service at home which is about 2 1/2 blocks from downtown of a small town. I would estimate the range to be a 1000 feet or less. There is a small restaurant uptown where he drinks coffee and eats his meals as well as the legion lounge where he may have a beer occasionally.

He has internet service at home now with a desktop. He wants to buy a laptop with the necessary access so he can carry his computer uptown to the restaurant. The restaurant and legion lounge are not internet capable and have no plans to do so. He would be tying into access his home network and the internet from the laptop at the restaurant.

There is no apparent place on the street in between to put in any bridges. The restaurant owner is friendly enough that she may allow him to install some device at the restaurant but because of trees in the area there would be definite LOS problems. If there was an inexpensive device that could be installed at the restaurant as a last resort, that may be an option.

He would also like to go to a friend's house and access the internet there but I'm not sure anything will range that far. We are talking about small town Kansas where the whole town is about 10 blocks square.

From what I have read so far, some routers/access points may range up to 1000' depending upon the antenna and interference. Any suggestions as to which of these have the best range would be helpful.

Also from what I have read, the limiting factor may be the range back from the laptop which would kill the whole deal. Any suggestions here would be helpful.

Thanks let me know if I need any more specifics.

You need to establish an LOS connection. This could be done by the following.

a. a pair of directional antennas
(nothing too fancy, some directional outdoor patch would work) - for the far away friends house, would probably need low end parabolic antennas.
b. a pair of ethernet adaptor bridges, one at either end to attach to the antennas, one to tx the internet signal the other to rcve it and pass it on to either a switch, or An AP to retransmit wireless. YOu could also get a dual radio unit here instead one to receive and one to retx.

The important thing is to get the adaptors close to the antennas for minimal losses.

The same thing can be done to his friends house!!

Re: home wireless network with 3 blocks or more range?

Im still new to the whole networking scene, but I may have some advice for you. My uncle is a truck driver, and he has a wireless internet service on his laptop that can be accessed from almost anywhere in the country, so he can use it on the road in multiple states. Im pretty sure that the signal is broadcast through either a satalite or a cellular phone antenna (the big ones that give you service). I am not sure who provides this service or what pricing would be, but I know that the speed of it is fairly poor. My uncle was showing me at my house once, and his signal bar was about halfway, and the speed was about like 56k. Sorry I don't have much information for you, but maybe someone else here on the forums knows what I am talking about, so they can elaborate on what has been said if you are interested.

wireless home network

Ok, thanks so far. I have been doing more research and found a site called www.wirelessnetworkproducts.com which explains things. It has lots of antennas and bridges. They mention a parkervision card that can range up to one mile los. I see you can get notebook cards that allow external antennas that extend the range.

I suppose he could put an external antenna on a pole on his house. Then if he can't reach the house from the restaurant, with a notebook card, then he is looking at carrying an antenna with possibly another wireless access point that would then be plugged into the restaurant.

I guess the starting point is to get the wireless access point with the best antenna setup available along with a notebook card that has a plug in for an antenna. Then check his range to see what additional antennas and a bridge/wireless access point is needed to be added. He may not want to carry around too much stuff though.

I also saw where that company mentioned above also sells an access point for truckers. That may be an option. There may be an internet company around here that has some type of internet access coming from a tower in that town. It may be a cheaper or better alternative to his home internet service. I will check into it.

Thanks for everything. I am off to get ready for this evening. Happy and safe New Year to all.
