Most likely this was a commercial like 'our kayaks are so good they can withstand...' Where within the entire video clip do you see any logos, selling points, trademarks, etc? If it truly is a commercial, it's a poor one at that.
I say it's real. The camera angles are off, there is no selling point, and the voices in the background sound too candid. There is nothing professional about the footage. |

For starters, the other 2 kayakers don't get as much as a ripple from the splashdown. |

I don't see how the guy's back/neck/whatever wasn't broken by a couple tons of whaleflesh coming down on him.
It looks like he's alive at the end of the video, doesn't seem very probable to me though. |

mcfrischRevelare Pecunia join:2000-07-02 Lakewood, OH | reply to 11337845 I side with the 'fake' vote. No waves from the splash down. Nevertheless, the whale flops between the camera and the kayak, so it doesn't make contact with the kayaker at all. More than likely, 2 videos were superimposed. I mean, the odds alone of catching this on camera! -- Mcfrisch(Cox HSI : Cleveland) |

 | reply to 11337845 Clearly fake.
1) The whale appears to surface forward of the yellow kayak on the right side of the picture. There's not contact on the way up.
2) At the time of impact, the kayak suddenly appears further to the right, like the whale flipped it over there. Except NOTE, the lower hull color is now white.
3) When the kayak appears to surface, it's clear that the entire color of the hull (lower and deck) are fully yellow.
So unless the kayaker decided to repaint the lower part of his/her hull while being flipped in the air (in about 1 second), then repaint or remove the paint while submerged, this is a fake. |
|
 | Clearly real.
1) You're right. There was no contact. Doesn't make it fake.
2) I'm sure a whale of that size would displace plenty of water as it broke the surface. Makes sense that the kayak would not sit still.
3) Go to a sporting goods store that sells kayaks. It's not uncommon for them to have multi-toned paint jobs. I didn't see any actual yellow-to-white changes on my screen. It could also be that the kayak is a close two tone yellow.
If you look closely, you'll notice that the whale didn't land ON the kayak, but rather near it. No squishing going on there. You can watch the splash/wake of the whale re-entering the water throughout the video. It doesn't affect the others greatly because it doesn't reach them. The kayak got sucked down in a current created by the whale entering the water. If it were two videos superimposed on each other, then how could a super-bouyant kayak disappear under the surface for that long without something external pulling it down?
You could always try and get your own video... »www.sanjuansafaris.com/kayak_5hours.html
I'm sure it would be a different video if the film was taken from a side angle rather than one where the whale eclipses the kayak. |

 | reply to 11337845 Just for your information, the incident was real, the person in the boat was treated at area hospital for massive soft tissue injuries, a fractured vertibrae, and stage 2 conccusion, no other injuries were reported and his boat had a midline fracture along the hull. You shouldn't de-bunk everything you see, it helps if you actually see the interviews with people who were there and with the victim from the hospital on CNN. He was released after 1 day of observation, and is still not back at work.

Someone told me it is a clip from a commercial for Powerade. I did some googling on 'powerade' and 'orca' and found this. Follow the links in that post, or download the attached video to see the whole commercial. |

Maybe we should email them and ask. |

 | reply to MikeRaach >The name translates to "Regis (a company) makes kayak".
Nonsense. If I said, "Regis fait du ski," would you translate that as "Regis made a ski"? Not after a year of French - it would be "Regis is skiing". Here, "Regis [presumably the very resilient kayaker who got walloped] is kayaking". |

 | reply to 11337845 My Qualification: None except I speak Korean.
The reason I'm posting: The people taking the video are speaking in Korean, NOT Japanese. If it was some Japanese Powerade commercial produced to represent, Powerade, I HIGHLY doubt that they would have put bunch of Koreans to sound surprised, frantic, and then finally sound relieved at the kayaker having survived.
Unless the morons producing this commercial couldn't tell the difference between Koreans and Japanese and just pulled off the street the first Asian looking people that came about and paid them a box of Powerade to ad-lib what they were saying. So I highly doubt that it was a Powerade commercial destined for Japan, more like Korea which makes me believe that the www.snopes.com doesn't know what the hell they're talking about which could mean nothing except that snopes.com is not credible enough to debunk this video as they did.
That's all I gotta say. |
