Re: [Modem] Westell ProLine 6100 DSL Modem Router:

OK nitpick if you like. If you don't turn it off it is open. What other reason/need is there for a custom firmware.

Not only that but it is reported that BS leaves some ports open or leaves a back door into the modem/router so they can get through to your PC if needed to troubleshoot.
Reported by whom? I've yet to encounter anything like this.
OK there are your reports.
I'd consider a way for the helpdesk to gain access that has to be enabled from the customer's side something very different than an open port or a back door. Yes, the port is opened when the customer chooses to do so, but it sounds to me like it remains in the closed state the rest of the time.

But, what would be their reason for disabling this model? Would it make it more difficult to set up?
My opinion is that Bellsouth disables features to make support easier. The less features a customer can make changes to, the easier it is for their Script readers to troubleshoot.

I remember calling BellSouth tech support in 2000 and asking if I needed a firewall. I had read on the internet about them. They said no. So I immediately downloaded Zone Alarm. It's version 2.1.44 and I still use it on all of my computers. The newest version isn't as good (IMHO). Plus, with AVG, Spybot, AdAware and the Westell NAT I hope will be enough.

I guess Bellsouth now thinks that if no one ever installs a firewall, the NAT is better than nothing. But, what would be their reason for disabling this model? Would it make it more difficult to set up?

I have the BellSouth 610030-06 and have mine hooked to a switch. So you're saying it is a router but with no firewall protection?
In this configuration the Westell is serving as a NAT which by NAT's very nature it will block unrequested inbound connection attempts. However, I'd still recommend a software solution on all connected PCs.
