I think that robbing the poor to feed the rich should be illegal. If you think about it, that's exactly what these record labels and other companies are doing. No, they're not robbing anyone. They're just charging a 2000% markup of the cost to produce the product and giving the actual artist probably 20% or less of the profit. I'm not going to split hairs with anyone over how much is cost and how much is profit from the price of a CD, but I do know that blank discs are much cheaper than a "professionally made" CD. Considering it requires little effort to put data onto the disc, I feel ripped off every time I buy a new CD.
Not only that but, if the profits are increasing instead of decreasing, that tells me that more, um, technology-handicapped people are entering the population than are people that have the knowledge to even be able to pirate these things. The funniest part of the whole situation is that, out of all the people pirating, they don't even realize how many of them could afford these things. I'm sure that there are some people that could afford it that don't pay, but there are many of us that can't afford it and wouldn't buy it if they couldn't get it otherwise. They think they are losing a lot of money, but I don't think so. Personally, I would rather have the professional version than a copied version and would pay for the professional version when I had the money. I'll bet that most people agree. That's why their profit margins aren't changing. |
