My guess is that MS is double-checking the old Giant just to be sure that it doesn't cause any problems. And hopefully, they're adding some features to help it deep clean the most pernicious infections.
I think it will be a real advantage having MS provide a product that can be coordinated with the actual code and programmers of the OS. And we can always continue to run another spyware cleaner if there are any doubts, or should MS decide in their own self-interest to ignore some marginal applications with which they are affiliated.
MS' self-interest lies in reasuring their corporate and governmental customers about security, so they should be motivated to do a good job of it. My guess is that they also realize that this is a strategic opporunity to bring people in house who can help keep their OS programmers on top of security issues. |
