If as in our case we had a cable and phone company who considered us too small to offer quality service
I agree whole heartedly in there right to make a profit and we are un-profitable by all means do not service us but we reserve the right to service our selves. |

Well, then I guess you think the government shouldn't offer:
Water: Competes with bottled water suppliers.
Public transit: Competes with taxis.
Garbage collection: Competes with private trash haulers.
Police: Private security companies can and do protect homes and businesses. Perhaps police should be limited to protecting public areas, not private property.
Hospitals: Compete with private hospitals.
Public schools and state universities: The private sector offers access to schools and colleges.

Public courses compete about $100 fee private courses
Libraries compete against book sellers and newspapers
Buses compete against taxis and car dealers
All are infrastructure and quality of life issues. We view FTTH as an infrastructure issue. Don't you?
Should all of our roads be toll roads owned by private businesses? Or should government provide the appropriate infrasture to move things around. Shouldn't data have the appropriate infrastructure to be moved around in? |

Not only that, but a lot of these companies have recieved government help, with the promise of providing service. Look at all of the threads talking about how Verizon has screwed PA. If, instead of giving Verizon tax breaks and what not, the state government had rolled it out themselves, they would have fiber already and they could have paid for it with the money that was given to Verizon, who so far, hasnt lived up to its promise.
Now, in areas where the companies already provide decent service for a decent price, the muni's really have no reason to roll out, but in areas where there is no broadband, or where the companies are only offering thier lower 1.5/256 offerings instead of the newer 3/374, which seems to be about the new average, it at least shows that they are trying.
What I think the government really needs to do is start upgrading the countries backbones and connections too the backbones. Maybe that would help with some areas slowdown problems, and they should also pass a law saying that if you offer such and such speed, you need to provide that service so that your customers can utilize the full offering for at least 75% of the time. Instead of people being capped, disconnected for using the service they are paying for (which I DO understand, if they over sold the node and cant afford to let everyone go all out though, then they should upgrade so they can), and with cable having that "peak time" slow down.
God I hope that made sense, its midnight and I just woke up, and havent gotten sleepy enough to fall back asleep yet.

Water: Water is a necessity of life. Any responsible government should ensure it's availability and quality.
Public Transit: There are exceptions but most places public transit is a joke.
Garbage Collection: The garbage business is run by the mob, not the government.
Police: Without law and law enforcement there is only chaos and anarchy. No police equals no government at all.
Hospitals: Government run hospitals (the few that are left) are a good place to die.
Public School: Private schools do a much better job for much less money than public schools do. Public schools exist because we're attempting to make sure everyone gets a basic education. Judging by the dopes I run into everyday, both in urban areas and in rural areas, I'd say the attempt is falling somewhat short.
Pure freedom is anarchy, survival of the fittest. Governments exist as a limit to freedom. A certain level of that is necessary but the less the government gets involved in anything, the better. |

They are not competing for the same customers.
Since most libraries get books in several weeks after they've published and only carry one or two copies, you can wait months to read a popular book. For twenty bucks you can read it today. Libararies aren't siphoning very many sales away from bookstores.
The only people that ride buses are those that can't afford cars. |
