extending wireless coverage

Hey everyone

i need a bit of advice, i recently got a D-Link DI-624 wireless router set up at home its all working fine except i need to extend its range, currently it goes half way down my hall.

lets say it goes 40 feet roughly well i just need it to go a further 10 feet, has anybody any ideas how i can do this or whats the best way to do it.

thanks

Re: extending wireless coverage

dlink makes antennas to increase range

your other option would be to setup a repeater

Wire the router to a more central location.
Get a ethernet adaptor bridge and wire that to another AP.
Get a repeater (with dual radio).

I have a wireless desktop that was having trouble staying connected until I bought a $7 antenna on ebay that cables up to the card, allowing me to place it on top of the box for better reception. Some laptop cards also allow connection of an external antenna.

If it's a laptop you are using, be aware they are quite sensitive to position (eg., screen can "shield" the card's antenna if between it and the router. The card's antenna is really small.

You might also experiment a bit with positioning of the router's antenna. The radiant pattern for a stick antenna is like a donut, with the stick going up through the hole. A bit of tilt may raise the strength enough at your PC, particularly if the PC is above or below the elevation of the router.

Failing that, ANAV's advice to invest in $10 of Cat-5 cable to move the router closer to the user is valid. They even make stuff you can run through A/C and heating ducts.

For an additional ten feet try adjusting angle of antennas and /or something like this:

Cheers for the suggestions, i've tried the solution on the www.freeantennas.com/prod01.htm site

couldn't believe the improvement it made and i was just using cardboard and tinfoil, unfortunatly i'm still bout 3 feet short!! its unreal!! i wonder if i used metal instead of tinfoli would it improve things?

gay2jp what kind of antenna did you get? did it extend it far?
Is there a certain power rating i should go for? whats the current rating on the antenna on the DI-624

The antenna I got was from MRTECHUS (»www.mrtechus.com/)

Extended antenna for wireless....
Item Number ACWIAN
price $7, no shipping

Did not move the PC, so it was not a distance thing, but I definitely have a more stable connection. It could easily be used in conjunction with a parabolic antenna.
