| reply to abst2act It's coming alright.
said by Comcast E-mail: Dear Comcast Customer,
We are always looking to serve our customers by continuing to improve our service offerings. We want to make you aware of a planned network upgrade - scheduled to take place this Sunday January 9, 2005 between 12:01 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
During this 12 hour upgrade on Sunday January 9, 2005 between 12:01 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, please do not unplug or restart your cable modem, router or home networking gateway, or reboot your computer.
The upgrade is designed to enable our High-Speed Internet customers to be among the first to access new information, entertainment and communication services. It also is designed to deliver additional network security and reliability, streamlined billing, and enhanced customer support and installations.
Turning off your computer during this time could potentially cause a service interruption until the network upgrade is complete on Sunday January 9, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. (Note: If there is severe weather in your area, we ask you to make sure you follow normal precautions and turn off and unplug your computer).
We are available if you have any questions about this upgrade. You can reach us through our Online Customer Service Center, or if you would like to speak with a customer care representative, please contact us at 1-888-COMCAST.
Sincerely,
Comcast High-Speed Internet

Yah, I'm gonna stay awake all night and miss work the next day, because Comcast tells me to (/dripping sarcasm). |

 | reply to fewtch I usually keep my PC running though the night (I turn my monitor and speakers off instead to save on electricity costs). The big thing is not to turn your *cable modem* off. |

Well you could always write down your IP info before you go to sleep and go static until the DHCP server comes back up. Just remember to set it back to DHCP ASAP or else you could cause a load of fun for you and one other lucky individual with an addy collision. -- Nothing is more intolerant of a diversity of opinion, than a liberal society touting the virtues of tolerance and diversity. |

fewtch join:2001-01-23 Renton, WA 1 edit | reply to abst2act Turning off the computer and/or rebooting is normal behavior. IMHO, this Email from comcast is disingenuous. They should say something like this instead:
"There will be a service interruption between XX:XX and XX:XX. The DHCP server will be offline. If you leave your computer on and don't reboot, you will be able to access the Net normally, but if you don't then you'll be unable to use the Net until XX:XX."
The fact that the DHCP server is offline makes it a service interruption, i.e. the DHCP service is unavailable for a period of time. I don't see how anyone could disagree with this, it's a simple statement of fact. |

djdanskaRudie32Premium,MVM join:2001-04-21 kudos:4 | As much as i want to agree with you, the average user may or may not know what a dhcp server is. And if they do, they can go to a forum like dslreports and find out what is really going on with the work being done by comcast. |
|
MortyPremium join:2004-09-18 1 edit | reply to abst2act Reason why it won't be listed as a service interruption is because people will call in and either complain or request a credit, most users (95%) will never even know it happened however IF YOU TELL THEM most cheap people will call in irate anyways. In this case it is not a service interruption as it is up to you whether you wish to lose your connection period during the cut-over. |

If you change it back before your lease expires theres no way that they'd know and it would not cause the situation for which using a static address is against the TOS. -- Nothing is more intolerant of a diversity of opinion, than a liberal society touting the virtues of tolerance and diversity. |

MortyPremium join:2004-09-18 | reply to abst2act It's still against the ToS. I didn't say there is a way for them to catch you. I said if you get caught abuse will not be nice to you. |

Combat ChuckToo Many CannibalsPremium join:2001-11-29 Erie, PA | You make it sound like temporarily setting a static to bypass the nonfunctioning DHCP server is the same as using your account to send spam, it's not; and I doubt that abuse would take much action beyond blocking your modem and telling you to set it back when you called in to complain. Whatever. I offered a solution, take it or leave it. -- Nothing is more intolerant of a diversity of opinion, than a liberal society touting the virtues of tolerance and diversity. |
