| (O T ) Coffee Makers?
OK, I know its way off, But, I Need Help
My Wife and I have gone through about 4 different coffee makers in the past 2 months...
The last one was a Mr. Coffee with a Glass Carafe that busted(which is probably what happens to most of them)
What I'm looking for is the Basic setup,Minimum 12 Cup, Preferably a Metal Pot, and a Reusable Filter, and under $45...
What I DON'T need: Auto-Shutoff(I don't know when I'll get to it, But, I want it HOT) Sneak-a-cup(I Can Wait)and I don't need another Clock to be blinking 12:00 :D
I've been looking on the net at various places(walmart,HomeDepot,Kohls,Sears,etc...) I also was on a couple of specialty sites with prices starting at $100 or so...
Any Recommendations? |

4 edits | reply to nonameyet There are TWO basic requirements for coffee. Beans (ground in some way) and hot water.
I assume you have a stove... hot water taken care of... then all you need is the vessel. (and a bit of actual attention )
Its almost ABSURD how unnecessarily hi tech coffee making has gotten.
Maybe the PERFECT satire of that was Marge Simpson seeing the high tech kitchen in the house next door for sale... with the automatic breadmaker, breadmaker. (machine spit out another machine to make the bread) Or Homer's big thing... the walk in Microwave... well until his few hairs caught fire... (we all know he has been irradiated enough in his lifetime to kill anything, so that wasn't a concern ) -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

| reply to nonameyet I like Braun and used one for about 15 years until it finally got so slow (even after cleaning, thoroughly) that I gave up on it.
I had trouble sorting through the claims of all the nice ones ($100 and up, sometimes way up) that I broke down and just bought a $25 Melitta at a grocery store. It makes great coffee and I'm now wondering if the expensive ones are all just hype. I've been using it for the past year or two and have had no problems with it.

| No offense, timcuth, but I'd advise against any Melitta. We got one a little over a year ago. It wasn't the $25 model, as it has a grinder, etc on it. All the mechanical items still work fine, but the lid on the grinder side...plastic with a snap top to keep it closed during the grinding process...has broken. Since it happened 4 months ago, we have continued to try to get a replacement. Every few weeks, Melitta, a division of Salton, sends us a postcard saying the part will be shipped in about 10 days. Backordered or not, their CS isn't very good. The thing still makes great coffee, but using tape to hold the lid closed is a nuisance.
OTOH, we've had good results with other brands, especially Braun. |

| Well, when I bought mine, I reasoned that if it broke, it was so cheap that I would just buy another one or something else. In fact, I only bought it as a stop-gap until I decided what I really wanted. But, it never broke and it makes very good coffee, so I am still using it.
For me, it was just a bonus that it turned out to be so good.

Thanks for the Replies..:)
I'll check out some of them, I need to get something this weekend:o
The problem we were having with some of them is:
They Drip Water all over the place, when you swing open the 'Brew-Chamber'
Impossible to Clean, with all the cracks and crevices collecting water and mold(eeuuuuu)
And, we did try one of the "stay hot for 4 hours" type with the ' Thermos ' type of Carafe(That was a Black&Decker)that one lasted 1 day before I took it back, it only stayed Hot for about 2 Hours..., I think Black&Decker should stick to making Electric Drills and stuff
I did see one type that We might be interested in, an 'Old Style Perk-o-later' I mean it's the same princible that the newer ' Drip-Style ' works as, I forget who makes it, but, I saw it I think at Sears on the web. and it was only $30:) |

1 edit | I have 3 coffee makers. Mr. Coffee, Braun & Krups(coffee & espresso) The Mr. Coffee is years old, was cheap and never dies. The Braun is tried and true and actually brews the coffee a little hotter. The Krups I broke the coffee pot lid the first week I had it, then busted the coffee pot while putting it in the sink. Yes, I slapped it in there a bit to hard, but not any harder than the other ones.
Ps. How is Sellersville these days? -- Write me up for doing 125....... |

2 edits | reply to nonameyet Hamilton Beach makes great machines, consistantly rate great, we've had good luck with them. The stupid pod machines rate poorly and suck! Avoid the Grind n brew models, Cleaning hassle and poor performance. Below are some from Consumer Reports top rated models:
I like this one: Hamilton Beach Stay Or Go 45234 Nice machine. »www.hamiltonbeach.com/products/products.html
--------
Best values for the basics: 1 Braun $20, CR Best Buy - Braun Aromaster KF400 3 Black & Decker $35 - Black & Decker SmartBrew DCM2500 11 Black & Decker $25 - Black & Decker SmartBrew DCM2000 12 Hamilton Beach $40 - Hamilton Beach BrewStation 47114 These are cool, No caraffe »www.hamiltonbeach.com/products/products.html 15 Proctor Silex $20 - Proctor Silex Easy Morning 41331
The Braun (1) is top-rated and inexpensive, but it lacks auto shutoff and produces 10 especially small cups of coffee. All have a glass carafe except the Hamilton Beach (12), which dispenses coffee into mugs that are pushed against its lever--convenient at parties. Black & Decker carafes were easiest to pour fast without dribbling. All but the Braun take a cupcake filter.
----- Best values for extra features: 4 Braun $60 Braun FlavorSelect KF180 5 Hamilton Beach $60 Hamilton Beach Stay Or Go 45234
Both are programmable. The Braun (4) makes 12 cups and has a glass carafe. The Hamilton Beach (5) has a full-size thermal carafe (eight cups) plus two insulated mugs. Both models take a cone filter. |
