Authentic Chinese/Japanese Restaurants

Does anyone know of any good authentic chinese or japanese restaurants in the area? If anyone's ever tried eating at restaurants in San Francisco or New York City, you'll know what I mean.

I've a compiled a list of places that I'm planning to try below:

Schezuan Delight
6238 Little River Tpke
Alexandria, VA 22312-1714
Phone: (703) 354-0005

Benihana
3222 M St NW
Washington, DC 20007-3621
Phone: (202) 333-1001

Thai Old Town Restaurant
300 King St
Alexandria, VA 22314-3212
Phone: (703) 684-6503

A&J Restaurant
4316 Markham St
Annandale, VA 22003-3024
Phone: (703) 813-8181

Matuba Japanese Restaurant
2915 Columbia Pike
Arlington, VA 22204-4336
Phone: (703) 521-2811

China Garden
1100 Wilson Blvd
Arlington, VA 22209-2249
Phone: (703) 525-5317

I've used zagat, washingtonpost, citysearch, and my co-workers for reviews.

Peking Gourmet

All the presidents go here at least once.
Awesome food, good lunch specials.

Yamazato
6303 Little River Tpk.
Alexandria,VA

Just re-opened as a Thai and Sushi place. It is very good. Big fresh pieces of sushi and some tasty drunken noodles. Two of my favorite foods under one roof.

Akasaka
514 S Van Dorn St
Alexandria, 22304
(703) 751-3133
Great little Japanese place. Go there once and they'll remember you the next time. Monday is dollar sushi all day.

Matuba is a good place.
Cafe Asia is OK... a little big and noisy for my tastes. I like cozy/quiet for Japanese.

Thanks. I've been to the Cafe Asia in Rosslyn. The General Tao chicken is my favorite. Their soups are small for the price they sell them for. I'm accustomed to bigger bowls for the same price.

I recognize 2 of the 3 restaurants listed on Zagat. Peking Gourmet was listed as having the best Chinese food. Yamazato ranks 3rd on the list.

I'd be surprised if this turns out to be a Chinese or Japanese restaurant, but I guess I've seen some misleading names for restaurants in my time.

If you do want to expand your thread to Thai and Vietnamese let me know, but I'll shut up for now in case that's OT.

I love sushi. My wife and I go to Yoko's in Herndon a lot because it's close and the sushi is good. It's right on Elden Street in the same shopping center as K-Mart.

Two other Japanese restaurants whose sushi I have loved:

Tachibana
6715 Lowell Ave
McLean

Tako Grill
7756 Wisconsin Ave
Bethesda

Cheng's is a very popular Chinese restaurant in my neck of the woods. It's in the Regal Center on Route 7 in the Countryside section of Sterling.

Yep, don't want to take it too far off topic, and I'm in the Baltimore area so no help here.

But if it gets expanded to Korean »www.koreandc.com/restaurant/list.cfm
Han Sung Ellicot City. Great sushi but don't think its worth a drive just for sushi, family style Korean is a different matter.
If interested in sushi, my experience has been that there are a lot of other nationalities that do a great job of this in non-Japanese restaurants.

Thai Old Town is definitely not Chinese, but it's a good Thai restaurant. Speaking of Thai, my favorite is Thai Square in Columbia Pike (near Matuba Japanese and Rincome Thai).

Cafe Asia is anything but authentic, judging from their Southeast Asian entrees. It's always crowded so one would thing the food is great, but that's where it ends.

My Chinese colleagues at work like Fortune, so it must be authentic to them.

I second the above on Matuba. It's a good Japanese restaurant with a great price.

Ah, forgot to mention Fortune, good call. Dim Sum is a strong point at Fortune, and you do see a lot of Asians there on weekends for their traditional dim sum brunch.

The one I used to go to was near my condo in Seven Corners on Route 7, but it looks like they moved. They're still in the Seven Corners area but on Route 50 - 6249 Arlington Blvd.

There's also one in Reston in the North Point shopping center right off of Reston Parkway north of Baron Cameron.

A&J in annandale is pretty good. Hunan West is where I usually go, its over in King's Park Shopping Center by Lake Braddock high school.

PF Chang's is the best, but its expensive and isn't really authentic...

My favorite Chinese restaurant:

Peking Village
2962 Gallows Rd
Falls Church, VA 22042
703-698-9220

It's right near the Multiplex Movie theater on Lee Highway in Merrifield, tucked in a strip mall. Very authentic, a point proven by the fact that most of the customers are Chinese. If you're not Chinese, be sure to ask for the Chinese menu (a laminated sheet of paper); it's got English translations, but they don't usually give it to non-Chinese.

Two in the City

City Lights of China: 1731 Connecticut Avenue (just north of Dupont Circle) The twice-cooked duck absolutely ROCKS.

Sushi-Ko: 2309 Wisconsin Avenue (no good metro access nearby)

Sushi-Ko... how could I have forgotten.

One of the best in the metro DC area... and right close to another best in the metro DC area establishment as well, but that is another thread all together

Another one to consider is Bonsai in Shirlington: very good food, great atmosophere, but a bit over-priced like everything else in that Shirlington strip by the movie theater.

Decided to give Full Kee (not key) a try. As noted, it's in Bailey's X-Road in the same strip as Best Buy, Trader Joe's.

When I went there, all of the clientele were Chinese in large groups, and this was on a weekday night. The food was very good too.

This is the kind of clue to look for. Some Chinese restaurants serve only Americanized Chinese food, and all their customers are American.

Makoto
4822 MacArthur Blvd, Palisades, Washington, 20007
Telephone: (202) 298-6866

Excellent Japanese food in a superb setting. Probably as authentic as can be found in the U.S. Intimate (i.e., small) seating area -- so reservations highly advised. If you're going for social purposes, ask for a table. Otherwise, sit at the counter for a great view of the chefs at work.

This is from a published review:

"Fashioned like a Japanese country inn, Makoto goes for the full Japanese experience including the requirement that all guests must take their shoes off and put on special slippers before entering the dining room. The meals themselves look so good, you’ll almost be afraid to eat them because they look like works of art, but once you start eating you’ll forget all your previous hesitations and there won’t be a spot left on your plate."

I agree completely. The Full Key food is just like the Chinese Food in NYC's Chinatown, which I grew up on. It's authentic, not too expensive and delicious.
Do try the boiled chicken with ginger/onion oil on the side or the stir fried lobster! For a quick meal, wonton noodle soup with roast duck and congee is great.

Cafe Asia for stinks! Their seafood is never fresh but its a nice bar atmosphere during happy hour. Since the seafood doesn't seem fresh I have never tried their SUSHI! PEE-EW!
