[wireless] BEFW11S4 V4 & Airport Express as Client

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I have been all over the web and Google for two weeks trying to get the AXP working with the above router. The intended use is as a client to stream iTunes to our stereo.

Apparently, according to many internet posts, the AXP is allergic to WEP, but supposedly possible to configure.

I have been using 128 bit WEP for over a year, no problem, pre AXP. However, although the light on the AXP glows green (occasionally), and iTunes attempts to stream, the song never starts.

I have occasionally been able to make the device work without security, but only temporarily at best. It doesn't seem to be able to work for more than a day- without security.

A few notes on my experience thus far
- The device is preconfigured to be a router, not to route iTunes as a client. The client level instructions and support on the Apple web site are brief.
- If you have a wireless router (ie my Linksys BEFW11S4) connected to your pc via ethernet- probably the most typical configuration- a user will be greeted on installation with "Windows is not set up to manage your wireless network". In other words, it works much better if you have a wireless card already in the computer that you are using to control the AXP.
- If your router has an Intel chip set, you cannot administer the device wirelessly, as Apple itself states on its site. The work around is to cable your Airport Express (AEX) to your PC or router, configure, then try to use it wirelessly.

Thanks, very much, for any assistance.

It could be that I am completely misunderstanding you, but as far as I know, the only routers that the Airport Express is compatible with are Apple Airport and Airport Extreme routers. Standard wireless cards should connect without problem, but not other wireless routers.

That's not to say that there isn't some technical way of overcoming this (I'll leave that to the experts in this forum), but I've seen more than one comment regarding compatibility (particularly when bridging to extend a wireless network).

Re: [wireless] BEFW11S4 V4 & Airport Express as Cl

The airport express is supposed to be able to be a client to any wireless b or g router, an in fact includes those instructions with the manual. In this configuration, iTunes can be wirelessly sent to your stereo- via optical or analog cable.

Many people are attempting to do just this- and struggling.

Yes, an entirely separate issue is attempting to extend a non-apple network, and there are instructions on the web on how to do this, but I am looking for a basic, advertised service.

Thanks for any help in setting up an AXP.

Ok. I understand.

This also may not be applicable, but is something I've experienced with Apple using WEP (I have an Apple Airport card using WEP with a BEFW11S4 v4). On the Apple side of things (when I set up my iMac with the appropriate password and SSID) the password must begin with a dollar sign ($), even if that is not present in the password set up on the Linksys router. As I don't own an AXP I have no idea what is involved in enabling WEP on it, but if there is a password that is associated with the AXP it may require a dollar sign as well.

I have no idea why my iMac requires it. Undoubtedly there is some technical explanation. But that might be the issue with your WEP incompatibility.

In terms of non-WEP functionality (or lack thereof) I can be of no help.

Good luck,

Steve
