| Comcast VOIP
Comcast plans to offer VOIP phone service to all of it's 40 million customers by the middle of next year with a price of $39/month for unlimited calling (if you subscribe to other Comcast products) and a "wide array of features". Comcast VOIP will also have priority over it's cable networks. Comcast plans to offer VOIP to 15 million customers (just over 1/3) this year.

The price seems a tad high but not that much more than AT&T Callvantage and about the same for unlimited calling plans from other RBOCs. I wonder if the Comcast VOIP priority will degrade service from other carriers like Vonage? |

From what I've read here and heard, Comcast Voip uses another channel on the Coax so it won't affect your HSI Bandwidth. I don't know if "shady" practices will arise with Voip traffic being throttled or otherwise hindered over HSI, though I doubt this will ever happen from Comcast of all companies.:D |

| reply to prestonlewis I'd give it a shot, if they'd give me the optium online deal (voip/cabletv/hsi) for 99$ a month I'd run to it. But even at 39$ depending on taxes and if it was unlimited local/long distance. For the amount of hassle I am having finding a provider that does VoIP and has control of the quality, I'd sign up tomorrow. "No its the switching network, thats why no one from the largest area code in the state can call you(Voicepulse)" or "We dont support fax (Voicewing)" to "No we dont have access numbers at that CO(Vonage)". Just give me provider that will take responsibility for the last mile quality and function. I want one provider for tv/phone/internet I don't care who it is just as long as the service is rock solid and has a good price point. Comcast has done 2 out of 3 for me so far, I'd give them a chance. |

1 edit | All cable companies will be using a private channel for their VOIP, so your data will not cross the internet at all. This should make it way more reliable in theory. It will be more like a direct connection from your end to the cable companies servers. I think the price point for cable companies is higher than say a company like Vonage because their customer acquistion costs are higher, as they have to build their own infrastructure plus supply backup powering on their networks and at the DTA as well. If you look at the situation between Vonage and ATTCV, which is right now their real competition, Vonage's strategy seems to be to undercut them by 5.00 . |

| reply to prestonlewis This "private channel for VOIP". How is that different from the 1.5 million telco customers Comcast picked up when they bought ATT&T Broadband which uses switched traditional connections instead of true VOIP (whether on a private VOIP network or the open internet network).
Is the private channel for VOIP the same as legacy Comcast/AT&T cable telco users or will it be a different animal all together? |

| Check out: »comcast.m0.net/m/p/com/div/Quest···AQs.html Not only do they add a $5.50 subscriber line charge/mo they also add an undisclosed "Regulatory Recovery Fee." Hmmm...now we're talking closer to $50 than $39.95 and less features than most of the other companies. |
