[request] Requesting larger file size for avatars

In order not to get OT in this thread:

»[request] Avatars - Bigger

I would respectfully ask for a slightly larger file size possibly 7K or above, for our 40X40 avatars. This could be as an entry premium feature, or even a slightly higher level (certain level attained, higher k).

I *sign* for the larger file if it would work with "I see People".

*neutral* How many people actually have avatars? This could possibly cause some storage problems at the moment.

This seems like an reasonable request. I think BBR tries to keep the file size down a bit on most images/animations to make surfing a bit more efficient, and not too much of a load on the servers, itself. Remember, this site is quite a large 'complex' on the net.
So, at this time, I'm: Neutral .

I think that's probably a non-issue. Images are constantly being uploaded to this site...Just to name a few of the `graphical forums':

• »/dev/null
• »Digital Imaging
• »Avatar/Graphics Help
• »Photos of Broadband gear
• »Home/Office setup photos

Then throw the image uploads from the various entertainment forums and tech forums on top of that. I think the site is probably OK on disk usage, comes down to a management decision.

What about browsing on a narrow-band connection? I'm sure you've browsed this site using a 33.6 or less connection before; even a 53k connection is only bearable for me. Of course, I do have mine set to 100 posts per page... Maybe the site could have an on-the-fly reduction of images or something for those on slower connections (reduce to one frame)?

Hell, while we're at it, why don't we make them 100x100 with 50k of space? I just don't see the point, so I'm going to change to *object* *undecided*. 5k is fine as it is; of course, I surely wouldn't complain if the size was increased.

I was just thinking of that- how was that when avatars WERE larger. Can anyone look at any pictures in DI, the headers, voting, for that matter just the pictures in dev null? Would an extra 2k per avatar make that much of a difference compared to say most forum headers-size could be as much as 30k? Realizing this is an issue only for non-premium that can't "not see" avatars in their preference. Was this as issue before avatars became 40X40?? Were they always limited to 5K?
