[help] Problems with Pro Speed Consistency

I've been getting really inconsistent speeds with the Pro upgrage and am unable to determine why (hovering between 1800 to 2100 down and 300 to 400 up). I used to get consistent 2400 down and 400 up when I first got the Pro upgrade.

I have to check my speeds through »nyc.speakeasy.net/ since when I use the SBC Yahoo! DSL Internet Throughput Test it just says, "The test is now running, please wait" but continues to say that for over 10 minutes and nothing happens.

Likewise, when I try to use the Tweak Test it says, "Failed to download, or server busy", and when I try to use the Line Packet Loss Test it looks like it is working and then just says, "cancelled". Therefore, I don't have any test results to share.

This may be another challenge for the incredible MrFixitCT!

Any help would be appreciated!!

-Jerry

Do you have java installed? »java.com

I assume you do because the Speakeasy test works.

Also, on the SBC speed test sites, this is a known issue. If you just refresh the page it should run.

You must also be pingable in order for the line quality test to work properly.

I've not tested the download speed since I got the package, but I have also seen inconsistancy in the upload speed, as measured by the usenet posting application I have.

I got very inconsistant downloads at the start, it settled out to 2400ish and I've let it be.

It's time to reboot modem and all, but I have never seen the upload speed affected by that.

Thanks for the suggestions - I have been out of the picture since a recent family event took priority.

I do have java installed. I tried refreshing during the SBC Speed Test with no luck. However, I don't believe I can be pinged. I do have every firewall on my Linksys router enabled and am hesitant to disable it to run the tests. What do you think? Do I disable the firewall or is there a way to modify it and yet stay secure?

I appreciate the feedback. My speeds are still all over the place and I would love to figure it out by tweaking my connection.

One other thing, I am using a 5100b and am seeing potential problems with that modem. Any thought?

But don't ever use any RWIN suggestions from tester page with our DSL, way to high.

I have an RWIN of 21K, it works best for me. The site talked about 25K. That was real bad for me.

If you're off a CO, then your RWIN is OK. If you're off a RT, you need to lower your RWIN to 13068 with DrTCP. »Tweaking FAQ »DRTCP: How do I use it and what are all these settings? leave everything else at default.

Why the 13K didnt work best for me, I have no clue. I'm pretty sure that whatever it is, it's nothing on the PC's here. I messed with three machines, all got the best and most consistant at 21K something.

When I was 1.5/384, the 13K worked like a charm. But I also had to re-tweak to 13K after the upload upgrade.

Thanks for the continued help from everyone. At least I know it is something on my end.

I tried lowering my RWIN with DrTCP and am now seeing speeds as low as 1400 down which is a new low for me and still haven't seen much above 2000 up.

I wish I could pass along my Test History. You could see that the first few days I always had over 2400 up and over 400 down. Now it is all over the place.

Any other ideas?

If the lower RWIN on a RT connection made you slower, then you need to check some things on your end. Filters, cables, cordless phones, modem to close to monitor. Remove router (if you use 1), uninstall firewall (if using ZA 5.xx).

Are you using a wireless router/card by any chance? If so, try changing the channel. Someone could have a wireless phone that's occasionally interferring.

Firefox acceleration?

Are you using Firefox with any of the "performance tweaks" that have been bandied about?

When I flashed my DI-808HV my service went down the toilet. Speedchecks would not finish, errors abounded, files could not download. I could not no longer use the URL filtering features of my router. Nothing I did fixed the problems. Boy was I mad.

But then I noticed that sometime in the distant past I had tweaked Firefox to make it "faster." Undoing the "fix" fixed most of my problems.

Re: [help] Problems with Pro Speed Consistency

As I had written above, I was having real problems with my Pro speed. There were many good suggestions and I was ready to start implementing them, but I kept checking my speeds. These are my speed tests from over the past month. However, I have changed NOTHING to my system to now see more steady numbers. I'm not complaining, I'm just a little befuddled.
