[Need] New Antivirus

Well, that's it... I need some recommends for a new antivirus.

A year and a half ago I had found this one "antivirus" roundup that did scans with several antivirus programs, and among them, McAfee was one of the ones that seemed to be the most sensitive, being one of the ones to find the most real viruses on this test machine that I actually heard of.

Well, unfortunately I haven't seen anything like that since, and now I really need for something that can be very powerful for scanning viruses, without lagging my machine up too much.

Why do I want to switch from McAfee badly?

Because they're using it. I refuse to do business with any company that will do business with AOL. So I need your help guys... and I don't know where to begin looking.

But is it any good?

See, if there was another review like that one that did that "testPC/antivirus shootout", it wouldn't be this hard for me to decide... but I haven't seen anything like that since I already went to McAfee.

Re: [Need] New Antivirus

PC-Cillin (Trend Antivirus) is a good antivirus, it is not the best but is good. We use the corporate edition at work. Free for the suite is a great deal

PC-cillin was voted in PCworld (last month) the best security suite out of Mcafee and Norton. I've used it before, and it is pretty comprehensive. Scans for spyware too.

PCC is just hard to get rid of if you ever plan to get rid of it. I also had a problem with the email scanner freezing from time to time.

The Security Forum ran a poll not too long ago:

»[Poll]: What AV software Do you use?

There's a bunch of A/V programs listed and the reasons why people like them.

I, personally use McAfee, have for years. Find it works for me just fine.

My favourite is Kaspersky5 . It is easy to configure and scans all POP e-mail as you download to your pc. You can set it for automatic system scans and automatic updates (as often as every three hours). Once set you can forget about it.

That's my 2cents.

C0deZer0,

You ever had a virus? In the last 10 years? The last virus I had was the keypress virus that I got from an Earl Weaver Baseball game's 5 1/4" floppy disk that was purchased, new, at Egghead Software. I was able to fix it manually without too much trouble. How about you? Are continuously attacked by virii? Do you consider yourself to be lucky that you had McAfee to save you form a malicious attack?

If the data you have is not considered as precious as the soul-corrupting One Ring, don't sweat it. Get something that is cheap and familiar. It will do the job, trust me. If you are attempting to secure a network for a business, then you might wish to look elsewhere for your security protection than basically an entertainment forum.

My Op only. Don't be hating.

Re: [Need] New Antivirus

Not necessarily virii, but every now and again, I end up finding a trojan or worm, that McAfee usually takes care of... but then again, now that they are with AOL, how can I trust them from blocking these things that AOLers usually use anyway? :p

It might not be like a ton of bank records or something, but I consider my data important enough to at least want to have something to protect it.

Re: [Need] New Antivirus

If you're worried more about Worms, and Trojans, why not us an AntiTrojan. BOClean, TDS, and TrojanHunter sell good AT's with lifetime updates. One License of BOClean allows you to use on all your PC's. TH and TDS is a per machine license.

The only thing I despise about McAfee is how to pronounce it properly. Mc Af ee or Mc af ee.

CZ try these out. I use them and they work great together, not too bad for free. I also run NAV and AVG usually catches things first.

I used to use Mcafee (mc a fee) till I discovered that it didn't like windows (95 - 98) all the time.
I then switched to Norton 2003, which I like a lot.
But I do not like the newer version of Norton.
So I'll be going with AVG as soon as my norton expires.

Well, for what it's worth, I managed to get BitDefender 8, which seems to also include a crapload of extra protection software, including a firewall and an anti-registry-changing thing (reminded me of spybot's system-settings protection).

So far it's proving to have a crapload of features and replacing a lot of the stuff I usually would have downloaded. Me likey!

I don't see what mcafee has to do with AOL and you not wanting to use it because aol is giving it away for free and you having to pay for it?

Because every software AOL has touched has gone to $h*t soon after.

And I refuse to do business with any company that will do business for AOL.

Have you ever tried to support an AOL user? Have you?

Until you've had to deal with that kinda support call, I wouldn't talk. We're talking the same kinda people that can afford a $12k workstation and yet can't figure out the difference between clicking a program icon and clicking the text to rename the icon.

I've had to deal with AOL with version 5 when I was living in another person's home... it was their ISP, and they were paying for it, and I had no choice at the time. The highlight of my disgust with AOL came in the form of the fact that the thing purposely deleted critical system files not soon after spending nearly four hours reformatting the thing because it was just that slow.

I agree. I faithfully use Norton Antivirus. Used to be a Grisoft AntiVirus (Free Version) fan. I have also used BitDefender too. Norton does the virus scanning jobs for me, though I wouldn't mind trying another program.

I too also highly recommend Avast Antivirus

It's completely free for home use, if it doesn't do the job you are looking for, you are not out of anything.

It updates on all of my pc's almost daily!
