or other VOIP providers. I bought this on a whim and now I'm thinking about returning it, if it is only good for Vonage since they don't offer my area code yet. |

You need to get the specific ATT model, which is WRT54GP2A-AT.
I would take the other adapter as if you are not going to use Vonage all you have is an expensive wireless router. |

| Why not return the WRT54GP2 that's locked to Vonage if you don't like it? (That is, of course, assuming you cancel Vonage within the 30 day return period for the TA.) Call me crazy, but I'm more a fan of having my router and TA separate items (even though I do have an ATT RT41P2 TA--their 4-port wired router/TA). I'm just not using the router function beyond the one pass-thru (the TA is directly off my modem). FWIW, if you keep the Vonage TA after canceling their service, you won't be able to upgrade firmware, while you would have the option with a separate router that you own outright (that isn't locked to one service provider).

@ny.frontier | The down side of getting your own router is, I think, there's a $40 disconnection fee, when you stop Vonage service. Can someone more familiar with these things confirm it's the case? |

I know Vonage refunds the disconnect fee upon return of Vonage supplied TAs. Can't say how retail works. |
