This could KILL business and consumer VoIP. My parents just switched to an internet phone service with Time Warner but the very first time they got a spam phone call at 2 AM for Viagra or Russian brides they would go right back to POTS.

The larger providers use encrypted key authentication between the SIP servers and the customers' hardware, so the only way those customers could get SPIT on would be the old fashioned junk call way.

As I pointed out in VoIP forum, I believe the article is referring to calls made from a robot via direct IP connection to the SIP hardware without going through a VOIP-POTS service providers.
