I promise you I am not trying to stifle discussion of the subject (I think that's pretty clear from my actions to date). I am just trying to restore sanity to this forum by keeping this all in one place, so it doesn't overtake everything else.
Please post everything related to the new OOL capping procedure in this thread.

this is plain silly.optimum should just let us run servers, and stop capping people. I seriously feel sorry for optimum when Fios comes out. I was looking at the fios and 15/2 sounds good to me.
will they cap you?

If you aren't aware - the current CMTS/UBRs are setup at 5megabits per second on the upstream channel. So, if five cable modems are using servers - at full speed, you can say good bye to the bandwidth. It's all about knowledge of the network, at hand.

For anyone who doesn't know, capping is a reduction of the maximum upload speed via a configuration file in your modem. The normal cap of 1mbps is lowered to 150kbps.
1. If your Upload is always below 150kbps you should check if you are capped.
2. To check if you are capped download DOCSDIAG
»homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.···ocsdiag/
and run it based on the directions at that site.
If you have a Terijet or a toshibs see the FAQ
Look for
QOS Upstream = 1000000 Normal
QOS Upstream = 150000 Capped

Well the entire internet slows down at times but that is not the fault of any one ISP. Cable companies have a more expensive project adding a new node as opposed to just connecting some dark fiber as The Phone Company does. |

When the dark fiber is activated that is the increase in bandwidth.

I was capped and I was just wondering will I get it back or do I have to ask for it back. I have not been uploading this is the first I have heard of this. I have been running a game machine abd was not aware of such a thing. What do I have to do, or should I say what can I do. |

It has been over two years since OOL started capping subscribers for excessive upload usage.
Despite all the posts predicting their downfall ("wait until DSL..." or "wait until FIOS..."), CV continues to sell OOL - and to impose caps.

There's nothing to be afraid of. Just call them, and tell them your cable modem is capped, and you to talk with someone who can uncap you. On the call back, the person will most likely give you a script of what to do to avoid being capped in the future. You agree to it, and bam -- you should be uncapped. Hopefully it's a simple process for yourself (I haven't been capped myself, yet).

| mudco, i would think twice about callingthem(some people i know in these forums have misteriously dissapeared after being recommeneded to call). they will harass you with no form of humanity. they will ask for your inner code and log into your pc so they can make sure your not running a server and you will have your privacy splatered all over. then they will take you into a swearing ceremony where you will plead to your gods not to abuse your upload again and only then when you agree is that they will finally let go of your soul so you can decide your destiny. They capped me today. Around 10 PM or so. Called in and they said I would get a call back tomorrow. Anyone know how reliable the call backs are? Do they uncap you right away? |
