| Free or low cost Antivirus prog for Win Server 2K3
Im currently running M$ Windows Server 2003 Evaluation kit on a new system build consisting of an A64 + nForce4-SLI configuration. It has been basically configured as a workstation and I plain to use it as long as it is convenient or the 180 day trail period ends.
Personally, I am hoping that Longhorn will come out soon and I can just buy that.
For now, all seems well so far but it has occurred to me that I dont have an Anti-virus program that will install on Server 2K3. Therefore, I am looking for a low cost or free Anti-virus program to run on Server 2K3 and any suggestions are most welcome.
BTW, it had dawned on me that I might just be able to setup the server 2K3 HDD as a mapped network drive and have another computer scan it over the network. Im not sure if this is a good solution though. |

Good luck on that one... last I heard it was going to be late '05 early '06, however seeing as it's already been delayed once, and they were expecting it to run on 5-6 GHz machines... well... we'll just wait and see.
You might take a look at Avast www.avast.com, I think the free edition will install on 2k3 |

| Excellent!
Thank you, very much!
I figure if the 180 days are up on 2K3 before Longhorn and Windows XP x86 edition come out Ill try switching to the Windows XP x86 edition evaluation kit. The x86 Evaluation kit is good for 365 days and I would give it a go as long as the current build is viable.
Its just a bit hard to decide on a version of Windows to buy now knowing that Longhorn should be out this year or early next,
..assuming it isnt pushed back,
..
If I were buying a copy now,
Id probably get Windows XP MCE 2K5. I already have MCE 2K4 and MCE 2K5 but I would need to buy another copy for this build if I were to go that rout.
Anyway thanks again for the suggestion.
Any additional suggestions are very welcome as well! |

fegul, AVG has a free Network Edition Trial Version,
60 days I think,
If I can demo an OS I sure can demo an anti-virus program,
Better then nothing,
.
atangel, Im not sure what licensing you are referring to but generally speaking licensing is indeed a concern because it is my intention to respect all EULA for the software that I use. |

As for longhorn or the XP x86-64 coming out in 180 days... I wouldn't hedge bets on it, though the XP x86-64 may release before that... anyway it would definately come out before Longhorn. -- O! - H! ..... I! - O! |

Right!
What I was trying to say is that I can switch to the "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition evaluation kit" which has a 365 day limit.
Not sure if it has come along enough to actually use but I can give it a shot.
If not, Ill have to bite the bullet and buy before I would actually want to.
or maybe I can try the 64bit version of Server 2K3 but I think you need an Opteron or Itanium for that,... |
