[Connectivity] Initial setup question

Well i'm on the verge of switching from DSL -> Comcast (purely a distance related thing). I'm worried about the setup process.

My intention is to prove out the circuit using a laptop connected directly to the modem, and once it's proven to be working, switch back to my router.

My concern is that after the initial setup the MAC address of my laptop will be registered and thus my Router won't work.

Is this assumption correct or will the Router MAC take effect and override the laptop MAC. I really don't want to get into the whole 'MAC cloning thing' since in my mind it shouldn't be required (although all the LinkSys FAQ documents would lead you to believe it is).

Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: [Connectivity] Initial setup question

No, I don't believe this is the case. The cable modem's HFC MAC Address is registered with Comcast's Network. You can use the router, or direct connection anytime you feel like doing so. Some situations may require the cloning of the MAC address to get your router to work - but, as I stated, this is some situations. The overall switch to cable should be quite simple, indeed.
