[DIRECTV] March 1st Price Increase

Below is an excerpt from SkyReport

DirecTV Readies Package Price Increase

DirecTV will raise prices for its consumer packages on March 1, the satellite TV company revealed late Thursday.

On average, rates will go up for DirecTV customers by 4 percent, when taking into consideration the $63 in average monthly revenue generated on an average customer basis. The packages mentioned by the company will see a $3 increase.

The Total Choice package will go from $39.99 a month to $41.99 a month. Total Choice Plus will climb from $42.99 a month to $45.99 a month. And Total Choice Premier will jump from $90.99 a month to $93.99 a month.

Prices for premium services will not see an increase. The upcoming price increase also will not cover sports packages, though pricing for sports packages typically are announced in advance of the particular sports season start and usually change year from year.

Hmmmm, may be time in March for me to call up DirecTV and ask for a promotion deal, to help offset the increase.

I think this is a bad move for them, they have been long time of knowing to not hit consumers with price increases left and right, which is an incentive to sway customers away from Cable.

I think they just had a price increase a year ago didn't they?

They seem to be going the way of constant increases now.

Yes, it was a year ago, price went up $3??? Not sure on the amount.

There was more in the article, the usual progamming costs went up along with opening two new call centers.

They do have a great retention department. Although I dropped them for reasons outside of my control, the retention department really tried hard to keep me as a customer and offered great options. So they may be an option to get a good deal.

1 year a part isn't to bad cable co's raise them more times in a year than i can count, and take away channels when they do. And when the cable co's raise there rate it always more than $3 a month. Oh and by the way Dish network is going up also.

All the other companies raising rates has been posted before. But DirecTv was a new article so I added it.

Although not a cable subscriber, where I live is a once a year increase, so lets not throw all into the same bucket.

Programing Contract or a time commitment?

If you have an annually paid program package. It will probably not change until it is up.

If it just a 12 mo commitment for a free promo deal I think you will find that programming price is not guranteed, just that you are commited to having for 12 months or whatever. (Unless it was a guaranteed discount rate for X period)

Yes, those in a contract will keep the same price until the contract is up. DirecTV will bill you the new price but provide a credit back in for the difference between the old and the new price (in this case $3)

my total choice plus bill is 39.99 a month and total choice plus with LOCALS is 42.99 right now i think..

either way directv is cheaper than dish for the channels i want for the time being that is*

so far directv has raised the price 2 times in 2 years in increasements of 3 dollars a piece.

when i first got directv back in 2003 i could get the following.

total choice without locals $31.99
total choice with locals $34.99
total choice plus without locals $36.99
total choice plus with locals $39.99

now its the following.

total choice without locals $36.99
total choice with locals 39.99
total choice plus without locals $39.99
total choice plus with locals $42.99

That's the way they did it last time, but I've heard that they won't be doing that this time. It's only rumors, but don't be too shocked if they don't give the credits.
