 | reply to Wildcat_17 Okay guys here it is. Thought I would test it again this morning before I pass on the success.
This has worked time and time again, now all you need is a little patience.
I have found through dialling multiple DirecTV numebrs throught the US (numbers for intitial setup and daily call) that there are four states that can occur when calling and they are:
1) Phone line is busy 2) Modem could not connect 3) Modem handshake failed 4) Connected, service not answering
We are interested in 1 and 4 as these are the ones you can connect to. In other words if you dial an access number and get state 1 or 4 then re-attempt after waiting about 5 seconds (this may take 2-3 retries) but it will work. If you get state number 1 then you are getting somewhere and state 4 is after you've actually connected and it is trying to negotiate.
Now that being said it all sounds too easy right, well there is a few small quirks and they are that in certain US states the numbers you call locally will not work at all over VOIP. FOr example I live in Colorado and all of the local numbers around 2 area codes gave me dialling states 2 and 3 which would not connect me no matter what. SO with that in mind I tried further out (bearing in mind we don't get charged for long distance on national CV plan who cares right). and sure enough it worked. I also tried a few other states and ther numbers this morning and the exact same thing rang true. If you get states 1 and 4 try redialling a couple of times and you'll be in luck.
Post your responses after trying and let me know what you all find as well. Those who know me will know that I couldn't leave a post without some concrete things for everyone to try so after much testing here is some final info for those who are despairing.
1) I'm using a Samsung 100hr DTIVO Series 2 & an RCA
2) AT&T CV tested both direct to TA and home wired through house and both work with this
3) I found better luck with a 2 line phone cable although I did get both to work the DTIVO seemed to like it better and caused less retries.
4) The connection to negotiation phase takes a little longer than usual *states 1 minute but in my opinion takes up to 2 minutes 30)
5) This was all completed with the standard internal DTIVO modem, no external modem was used in this testing at all.
6) Turning the AT&T CV FAX & DATA option on or off made no difference at all.
--------------------------------------- OKAY SO NOW FOR THOSE HAVING PROBLEMS CONNECTING TO A LOCAL ACCESS NUMBER HERE IS ONE SETUP THAT WORKED FOR ME BUT TRUST ME A NUMBER OF OTHERS I TESTED DO AS WELL
On the phone connection screen leave everything as standard, no need to set CW or dial prefixes. Change the area code you want to search for local numbers to any of your choice but in this case we will use NEW YORK which is 212. Click on continue and let is dial the access numbers. After 3-4 attempts (if not less) you should connect to stage 2 which will ask you to select a local dial in number. Forget the MANHATTAN SOUTH as these do not work but there is one specific NEW YORK CITY number which should be 212 271 7103 and that is the one you want.
Now here is another important fact, when you select the number and how you want the DTIVO to dial it remember to select the 11 digit dialling version, EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.
That should be it.
Have fun and let me know because I'm happily dialing out now and will not think twice about resetting my tivo if it becomes bogged down again, safe in the knowlege you can make the guided setup and daily calls over CV VOIP.
Let me know how you go
