 Canceling Directv

My contract is up in Feb. I was wondering when is the best time to cancel. Do you cancel on the contract renewal day the day before? I want to avoid getting nailed with cancelation charges by canceling early. Can someone help me out on this procedure?

I would cancel on renewal day, or the day after.

I believe they still pro-rate the service, so if you cancel one day after, I don't think they will bill you for a whole month, don't quote me on that though.

The best way to find out would be to call 1-800-DIRECTV and ask a professional.

Keep in mind, if you ask for customer retention, they may offer you a special deal to keep you as a customer.

Cancel anytime after your official date. I'd go a few beyond just in case there's a difference in interpretation of when you're contract is really over too... You don't re-start a new 12-month contract like some companies (cellphones) often do.

FYI... I called them a few months back to ask how much their early termination was fee was and they said it was $12 for every month left on the contract. Just food for taught.

I've read that it's pro-rated. If you cancel in the first month, it's a lot. If you cancel in the last month, all you have to do is cover that last month. Basically, you "buy out" the rest of the contract.

Also if you read the superfine print of your contract, I always read that stuff , it says that if you ship back your receivers they'll wave any cancellation fees.

yeah I noticed that too. I wonder how many people they actually tell that if they ship back their receivers they dont have to pay the cancellation fee?

Never heard that before either ! I think most people know that it will cost "a lot" if they cancel before their contract is up and never follow through with it. They just wait out the 12-months...

Of course, what does D* tell you ?? Do they conveniently forget to mention that the fee is pro-rated or that it's waived if you return the equipment ??

Actually yes, they do tell you.

What cell phone company does this? I've never heard of that.

It was either Clark Howard or our local tv station's "consumer watchdog" that did a story on it. Something about unless you tell them by a certain time, they'll automatically renew your contract. I could be way off or the story could be.... I'm sure others have heard of this though. If not, maybe it's not true.

It's called an "evergreen" contract, in some states they are illegal. It will renew automatically unless told not to. Lot's of companies use such agreements, DTV for sure, and various other long distance/local telephone, and cellular providers. Probably many more. I think they should be illegal period.

DirecTV does not use those contracts. As for cellular companies, I can personally vouch for Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Nextel all not using those contracts as well.

When activating service for customers they are offered promotional "3 months of -insert package here- for free" if they dont call and cancel, the $ will be added to the bill. As a former manager for an unnamed telephone company that provided LD, local and data services, we did use these. Except in NY , which , I think did not allow them.

Section 4 of DTV customer agreement...

We reserve the right to change the terms and conditions on which we offer Service. If we make any such changes, we will send you a copy of your new Customer Agreement containing its effective date. You always have the right to cancel your Service, in whole or in part at any time, and you may do so if you do not accept any such changed terms or conditions. If you do cancel, you may be charged a deactivation fee and issued a credit in accordance with Section 5. If you elect not to cancel your Service after receiving a new Customer Agreement, your continued receipt of Service from us will constitute acceptance of the changed terms and conditions. If you notify us that you do not accept such terms and conditions, then we may cancel your Service as provided in Section 5, as we cannot offer Service to different customers on different terms.

In other words, no cancellation will be taken as a acceptance to continuation of the agreement.
I hate all that legal jargon.

Section 5 of DTV customer agreement

5. CANCELLATION

(a) Term. The term of this Agreement is indefinite and Service will continue until canceled as provided herein. WE WILL AUTOMATICALLY RENEW SERVICE THAT YOU SUBSCRIBE TO ON A PERIODIC BASIS, INCLUDING MONTHLY AND ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS AND SEASONAL SPORTS SUBSCRIPTIONS, AS LONG AS WE CONTINUE TO CARRY THE SERVICE, UNLESS YOU NOTIFY US THAT YOU WISH TO CANCEL IT.

Just gives me a headache reading all that mess.

What that means is that they will keep your service active every month without you having to explicitly ask for it. Seems like something obvious, but every little thing needs to be spelled out in the contract.

Section 5 does cover annual and seasonal subscriptions, and sports packages. Good thing is, they usually inform you before they drop the atomic bomb on your bill for NBA or Sunday Ticket
