WRV54G: No internet connection through wireless

Hi

I´m trying to connect through a wireless connection to the internet but it´s not working.

My setup is:

- DSL modem/router:
Local IP: 192.168.0.1
Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS on, DHCP off.
WAN IP and DNS as provided by my ISP

- Linksys WRV54G wireless router:
Local IP: 198.162.0.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

- Computer 1: network card
Local IP: 198.162.0.3
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

- Computer 2: wireless card,
Local IP: 198.162.0.4
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

The layout is:

dsl LAN cable
ISP ------ modem/router ------------- Computer 1
|
|LAN cable
|
WRV54G )))) wireless (((( Computer 2

The DSL modem/router and the WRV54G are connected through a standard cable plugged in port 1 of each router (WAN port on the WRV54G is not used right now)

The problem is: Computer 1 sees Computer 2, can share files, printers, etc. Computer 1 has access to internet, but Computer 2 doesn´t have. Why? Still, if I connect computer 2 through cable to the WRV54G, using the same settings, the internet connection works.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: WRV54G: No internet connection through wireles

see if you can ping 192.168.0.1 (your gateway) from computer 2.

if you can, try to ping your wan ip.

if that works, check your dns, as that is probably the issue.

if that does not work, double check that your gateway is set correctly.

The LAN subnet of WRV54G is same as WAN Subnet !

I don´t understand what you mean, as the WAN port in the WRV54G is not used and the WAN IP is not configured there (there´s no need to, the modem/router has the appropriate configuration). The IP given is for the LOCAL network, not the WAN IP.

By the way, there was a transcription error. All the computers and routers are in the 192.168.0.xxx subnet (not in the 198.162.0.xxx like shown). The actual configuration is:

- DSL modem/router:
Local IP: 192.168.0.1
Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS server on, DHCP off.
WAN IP and DNS configured as provided by my ISP

- Linksys WRV54G wireless router:
Local IP: 192.168.0.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

- Computer 1: network card
Local IP: 192.168.0.3
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

- Computer 2: wireless card,
Local IP: 192.168.0.4
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

Ok, now it´s working

Solution: change the IPs

Modem/router:
Local IP: 10.0.0.1
Mask: 255.255.255.0
DNS on, DHCP on
WAN IP and DNS as provided by ISP

WRV54G:
WAN: Automatic configuration through DHCP
Local IP : 192.168.0.2
Mask: 255.255.255.0

Computer 1(& 2)
Local IP: 192.168.0.3 (& 4)
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.2

The new layout is:

dsl LAN port WAN port
ISP-------Modem/router--------------- WRV54G )))) wireless ((( comp. 2
LAN |
cable | LAN cable
|
Computer 1

So now the computers are connected by a lan cable or wireless to the WRV54G, and this one is connected through a LAN cable plugged in the WAN port to a standard LAN port on the mo d em/router.

It works!!!

FYI Faskis,

but an easier way "might" have been to set you modem/router to operate in a "bridge only mode" to nullify the dhcp assignment and then just run everything (thus making the modem run "strictly" as a modem) and then let the wrv54g handle everything. I'm noticing over here in England a lot of the modems over here are becoming more integrated with routers and they have "bridge only mode" and a "RFC 1483 bridge" mode.

Curiousity from me, though: did you already try what I mentioned above and it didn't work? I'm guessing you must have gone through a few other configurations until you found your answer...
