Thank you to all of you who answered with tips. I finally got the thing to work. Without your help and advice I'd probably still be fuming. |

| reply to gr8shetland Here's what I understand the scenario to be...so please do correct me if I'm wrong.
You have One (1) Telephone Line, that carries the DSL signal and Basic Phone Service.
You are trying to use the Dell AIO to recieve faxes, but for some reason it's not recognizing the call...
Here's what you need to do -- I've got a Fax Machine setup on my line as well.
Make sure that ALL Telephone Lines have a DSL Filter (the in-line filters that came with the welcome kit) properly installed on it.
Assuming that you have a dedicated "jack" that you plug directly into the DSL Modem at the computer, you will not require one here as long as the modem is the only thing being plugged in. If you have the Fax Machine plugged into it, you should be able to use the "in-line coupler" (otherwise known as a phone splitter) and 1 filter that plugs into one of the available slots and then plug the phone cord into the filter, which then would go to the fax machine. The other side will go to the DSL modem.
Try to make a test call to the fax machine to see if it picks it up then. Also, check to make sure the Answer settings on the AIO are set properly (i.e. the number of rings). If you have any additional questions, feel free to PM me or use the Email link.
Hope this helps!

| reply to gr8shetland try removing dsl modem and just plugging your fax into the phone jk if this doesnt work check your fax setup the dsl and phone signal are 2 different signals riding along the same wire 1 doesnt affect the other as long as the phone signal is filtered by unplugging the dsl modem there is not a dsl signal on your line |

| reply to brooklynman4 Thanks to all of you for your input. POd at VOL, I hooked up the handset and was able to use another line to place a test call. It worked. But yet...when I tried to send a test fax my AIO doesn't recognize the incoming call. I know the software is there because I've received faxes before installing the DSL. I'm stymied as to what the problem could be - and getting disgusted. |

| reply to gr8shetland Bear in mind that a fax machine is an analog device - it works by sending sounds over an ordinary voice telephone line. Your DSL connection is digital, but you can still plug an ordinary analog device (whether a phone or a fax) into the same line as your DSL connection, and, as long as there's a splitter there, the analog and digital services shouldn't interfere with each other.
So first of all make sure you can make an ordinary voice call over your DSL line, by installing the appropriate filters, and plugging in a handset. Once you're done that, you should be able to plug the fax device in instead of the handset, and off you go. Your Fax device doesn't know or care about the internet, whether you're using dialup or DSL. |

| reply to gr8shetland said by gr8shetland : In the directions for the AIO is states not to connect a DSL line to the AIO. Without going back and checking, there are pictures of how to use the AIO in standalone mode when connected to a DSL line (where to put the filter and such). Try getting it working that way first, not hooked to the computer. |

| reply to JohnA It's taken me a few days to get back to this. Had the flu or something. Andyway....
I have a wall phone jack dedicated the the pc. I don't have a telephone on this line at all. I hooked up a spliter at the wall. Attached a DSL filter to the right "hole" and connected a regular telephone cable to it and the other end to my AIO. The DSL cable line is in the left "hole" of the spliter.
I tried faxing to this line and still no go. Is it a hopeless case? In the directions for the AIO is states not to connect a DSL line to the AIO. Are my hopes for connecting the fax in my AIO to the dedicated pc wall jack shattered? If so, what a waste of the AIO's potential.
Thanks for everyone's input.

The A960 connects to the PC by USB. There are two phone connections on the back. One goes to a phone, the other goes to a phone wall jack. The one that goes to the phone wall jack is the one that has to have a filter. |

| reply to gr8shetland POTS = Plain Old Telephone Service = basic dial tone. Fax machines and AIO's are still considered POTS devices - therefore, they need DSL filters. You need to install a DSL filter on the cable from the AIO to the CPU (that should be a phone cable). It doesn't matter which end of the phone cable the filter is installed on. If the fax modem in the Dell is hooked up to the same phone line that the DSL is on, you need to install a filter on it - simple as that. Again, it doesn't matter where you hook up the DSL filter, as long as it is hooked up...If you are attempting to receive faxes on either the AIO or the fax modem, they need to be filtered from the DSL signal.... |

| reply to nycdave nycdave,
Forgive my PC ignorance but I haven't a clue what a POTS line is. I'll take a stab at its meaning by describing my hook-up. The DSL cable comes out of the dedicated phone jack and goes into the DSL modem. Since there is no telephone on this line I don't have a filter installed. The ethernet cable goes from the modem to the CPU tower and the power cord goes to the surge bar. The Dell AIO has a phone jack-type cord that goes to the rear of the CPU as well as a cable. The Dell AIO isn't connected directly to the DSL modem or the wall outlet. There isn't a place to install a filter on it. The fax modem is part of the Dell 8300, not a stand alone. I do have a stand-alone fax machine that has nothing to do with this set-up. I don't like using it to receive faxes because it IS on my phone line and if I don't know one is coming in, it screws up my answering machine and one of my kids answers it and frustrates the sender. |

| reply to gr8shetland What POTS line does the DSL ride on? The line with the AIO and the stand-alone fax machine? If you have ANY POTS device on a DSL line, you need to filter out the DSL signal to the POTS device, including a fax machine or an AIO...Make sure the filters are installed on the fax machine and the AIO, and that should solve your inability to receive faxes...

| Hi, I'm new to DSL. I just discovered I can't receive faxes since I installed DSL. I looked in the FAQs but the q/a didn't fully answer my question.
I have a dedicated telephone line for my PC. I have all the Verizon lines installed and am able to surf the web and get/send e-mail. Per the instructions, since it is a dedicated line I do not have a filter on it.
I have a Westell Versalink 327W DSL modem. I have a Dell 8300 with Windows XP HE. I have the software for faxing and indeed, before DSL, was able to send & receive.
I have a Dell AIO A960 printer/fax/copy machine. I want to know is there anyway to config this set-up to allow me to send/receive faxes via my Dell AIO? I have a Sharp UX 355L on my regular telephone line but unless I know a fax is coming in and disconnect the answering machine and ignore the telephone (try that with 2 teen-aged girls) I miss any faxes coming in.
I'm not especially technical so if anyone answers this could you make the terminology "idiot proof".
Thanks.
