Re: [Newsgroups] Newsgroups with secure access

Yeah, exactly what was written above

And thanks for that info above, yeah, I guess it is kind of pointless now that I think about it.

Indeed, all Newsgroups use the NNTP protocol but not the NNTPS protocol.
NNTPS is NNTP with SSL, to increase the security ( ie encrypt packets between sender and receiver ).

Don't all newsgroup providers use the nntp protocol?
If so, the nntp part of the question is pretty pointless, the only interesting part relates to downloading directly via http without a newsreader.

There is very little point in using NNTPS for newsgroups.
Unlike p2p which allows enforcement companies to view your upload and download activities, a newsgroup connection is direct between you and the news server. The only reason for having nntps that I could understand would be to make sure that noone could identify from your packets the data you are downloading.
The fact of the matter is though, if the FBI or other government organisation had enough evidence to monitor the traffic going over your line then nntps is not going to save you one bit ( as they will most likely already have previous evidence to get the permission to monitor your connection, and therefore will most likely have more than enough to do wahtever they want ).

Octanews has nntps. Good block account but only 6.5 days of retention. I have researched it and easynews and octanews aer the only ones that do nntps.

What is "secure newsgroups service"?
Newshosting provides downloading via nntp and hhtp to its limited account users.

I'm using Easynews, and it has HTTPS for it's web interface and NNTPS for it's standard newsgroups service. Are there any other newsgroups providers that have this secure newsgroups service?
