| Desk top receives wireless signal but no access
I have a desk top and lap top. In order to connect my broadband cable signal to the desk top I had to go wireless as the desk top (DELL 1997) does not have a CAT5 connection. I installed a Netgear 108 Mbps wireless PCI adaptor in the desk top. My laptop was already set up to receive the Wi-Fi signal. The router is a WGT624 108 Mbps wireless firewall router. The set up was installed and worked for a month. The desk top now cannot access the internet even though the router signal is being received. The laptop continues to work fine. What is causing this and how can I fix it?
Thanks for your help....

First, do an "ipconfig/all" on the desktop. You can do this by going to "Start" -> "Run" -> type "cmd" -> type "ipconfig/all". Then paste all of it here.
Second, can you access the routers webpage, or any network resources (shared files, other computers)?
Third, do you run WEP/WPA or MAC filtering? If you run WEP/WPA, try retyping the security key. Sometimes it gets screwed up randomly. If you're using MAC filtering, try disabling it. -- The new Secure-Wifi.net is open! My Blog |

| Re: Need Help with extending wireless Range
info found at ipconfig/ all is as follows: C:\windows\desktop>ipconfig/ all Windows 98 IP Configuration command live options: ALL - display detailed information batch - write to file or ./WINIPCFG.OUT renew all - renew all adaptors release all - release all adaptors renew N - renew adaptor N release N - release adaptor N
I cannot open a browser and go to routers webpage. Since I am not on line.
I am not using WEP encryption so no security key. Not sure what filter I am using as I am not knowledgeable in this area.
I did a WINIPCFG and the Netgear Wireless PCI came up with
Adaptor Address IP Address Subnet Mask Default Gateway
I hope this helps your analysis of the problem
Thanks Again,

| So when you did winipcfg, it came back with no addresses? That'd be your problem.
For some reason you're not getting an IP from the DHCP server on the router.
Have you tried a different wireless adapter on the desktop to see if the PCI one you're currently using is the problem?
If you try to ping "127.0.0.1", is it successful? If not, try the solution given at »Networking Forum FAQ »How do I repair the TCP/IP stack in Microsoft Windows?. -- The new Secure-Wifi.net is open! My Blog |

| sorry for the misunderstanding....I did get addresses just didn't type them in.
Netgear Wireless PCI adaptor add: 00.09.53.C5.2B.24 IP Add: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
pin test did not give me anything but time outs
This setup did work for about a month. I can think of nothing done to change it.....The signal is there, it is just not being recognized by the computer |

| also there is a noise like a tapping noise every minute or two like it is scanning for the router signal yet the signal shows that it is being received on my computer.
I don't mean to be abusing these inputs ... just keep thinking of things that may help the analysis.

| Try pinging "google.com".
Then try pinging "216.239.37.99".
If you're able to ping 216.239.37.99, but not google.com, then you're having a DNS problem. If you have a DNS problem, go to: • "Start" • "Run" • type "http://192.168.0.1" • Enter your routers password/username •Try to find something that says "DNS 1" (or something similar) •Change the DNS servers to the servers your ISP gave you, instead of letting the router decide what to use. (If you don't know your ISPs DNS servers, you can try some that are listed in this FAQ: »Speakeasy Forum FAQ »What are the DNS Server addresses? )
An alternate solution would be to set the DNS servers on the computer, not the router. You can do this by going to: (This may be slightly different in Windows 98, but it should be similar) • "Start" •"Settings" • "Control Panel" •"Network and Dialup Connections" •Find your network card • Right click on the icon • Go to "Properties" • That should pop up a new window •Select "TCP/IP" • Press "Properties" (while "TCP/IP" is highlighted) •That should bring another window up • Check the circle that says "Use the following DNS servers" (see attached image) • Enter your DNS servers into those two blanks •Press Ok.
Then try to ping "google.com" and see if it is successfull.
Hopefully this helps -- The new Secure-Wifi.net is open! My Blog |

See this, if you are using WPA.
....
On a separate topic, please get a cable and connect your laptop to the unit. If you ever want to upgrade the firmware, or if you make a mistake configuring wireless security, you may find yourself locked out of your router on ALL clients. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA |

Pinged "google.com" with result - "unknown host"
Pinged "216.239.37.99" with result - 4 packets sent & Rec'd
Went to start/run/ »192.168.0.1 with result - will not connect with either Netscape or IE.
Try the alternate solution was able to get to TCP/IP to add DNS servers in primary and alternate fields however I do not know what to add. They were blank as it is on automatic now.
Was not able to get DNS server info because I could not connect to 192.168.0.1
The computer continues to do the rapid clicking sound every few minutes like it is scanning for another channel to connect to....is this helpful info? |

The driver for the hardware may have been corrupted, somehow, and reinstalling it could fix that. |

Is this clicking coming from the speakers? Or is it a mechanical sound coming from the chassis? In either case, I've never heard of this.
If it is coming from the speakers, it is probably nothing to worry about. Sound on the speakers has to be intentionally placed on the speakers by the O/S or some software program. (The possible exception is outside interference -- like when you place a cell phone on a speaker).
If it is coming from the chassis, that would be unexpected and likely means that a component is heating up -- failing (when you hear the sound) -- cooling -- and then starting over again. I cannot think of a reason that this would mean anything other than hardware failure. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA |

| The clicking is coming from the speakers. When I do a scan to find the signal present it has the same sound so I am assuming it is scanning for the signal.
I reinstalled the PCI card and driver to see if starting over would make a difference. Sad to say it did not.
I have run out of ideas and guess i must buy another PCI card. The one I have matches the router. Is this important? What card should I be getting now?

| Hey, this is an older post.
I've heard the clicking myself, since this. I had the back off of the PC and the signal was leaking into the audio system.
Nothing to worry about -- just a little unexpected.
If you have a Fry's Electronics near you, they have an Airlink 108 Mbps card for $10 on sale right now. The WGT624 is Atheros based so a 108 Mbps from Airlink, Netgear, D-Link, or AT&T will work at 108 Mbps. That router is also 802.11g compatible, so any 802.11g card will work with it at 54 Mbps. -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA |
