 | [XP Pro] Frequent BSODs in Win XP Pro SP2, please help Hi, this is my first post. Since about two weeks ago, my computer started to have BSODs. I have not done any hardware or major software changes; the BSODs seemed to have started all of a sudden. At that time, the BSODs I get are almost always "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL". The BSODs went away after I remove Norton antivirus 2003, but then they came back again. I followed people's advise and gradually removed all non-essential hardware, but the problem persisted. And it got worse; I started to have random "shutdowns" (not BSODs). My computer would just go black screen and only a white line across the top part. So eventually I replaced the PSU, reinstalled Win for about 5,6 times. Now I get BSOD every time I cold boot my PC from about 7,8 hours of rest. And it's not just once, I'd get BSODs 4-8 times and finally be able to boot into Windows. I'm really at my wit's end, and I humbly ask for your help. Thank you. Sincerely, Fred

 | I would try these two things. First, uplug the non bootable hard drive and see what happens. I have had bad hard drives that would make my system unstable. Second, try to run with one stick of ram...sometimes two different types or brands of ram will cause problems. Those are the easy checks.......Also....did you add SP2 to a working system, or did you start from scratch? |

What software changes did you do?
Two of your minidump files show a KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (BugCheck 1000008E) probably caused by d347bus.sys.
I believe the d347bus.sys is a Daemon Tools driver.
If you have Daemon Tools installed, consider uninstalling it. However the other minidump file show a KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (BugCheck 1000008E) probably caused by win32k.sys. That may point to a deeper problem, either hardware or software.
But start with Daemon Tools. |

 | Re: [XP Pro] Frequent BSODs in Win XP Pro SP2, ple to netgoblin: I've tried both things that you suggested, and the result is the same. The SP2 is added to a new XP install.
to auggy: I did not have any BSODs prior to two weeks ago, and I do not recall any software change. I've uninstalled Daemon tools as I type this, I'll report if that fix the problem. Thank you.
BTW, is it necessary to change a mobo's battery from time to time? |

qwaven join:2005-01-25 Toronto, ON | I think you should try running memtest86 for a bit and see what it reports on your memory. »memtest86.com/ "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" I've seen in the past be a result in failing memory. It can also be a result of incompatable or bad drivers.
Try the memtest, if all is well go to your motherboard and video manufacures websites and grab the latest drivers. Motherboard: GART, chipset, ide, agp...etc If its VIA you probably can use their all in 1 package. Video: cataclyst (radeon) or detonator (gforce)...etc www.ati.com www.nvidia.com Also make sure you dont have anything overclocked in your bios. If your not sure you can try setting your bios to fail safe settings or optimal settings. They will most of the time work flawlessly.
As for your hard drives which also could be the problem. disconect whichever drive is not your boot drive. go to your manufacture Western Digital or Maxtor and downlaod their drive test tool. Run it and see what it reports. If nothing you can try the same on the other drive and see if it reports anything. Careful not to use any of the format tools if you have any data that you want to keep. Although doing a low level format can help, it will erease and rewrite the magnetic values on the drive. not just the 1's to 0's thing.
Anyway try these out and see what happens. -- CPU: AMD 3200+ MB: DFI LAN Party NFII B RAM: 1024 MB DDR PC3200 (2-2-2-5) HD: 2x60GB RAID0 + 160GB VID: Radeon AIW 9800 Pro 128MB |
|
 | to qwaven: I've already used memtest86 and it showed no problem. Same thing with my HDDs, and I've also tried disconnecting the non-bott drive. I'm using the latest driver for my 5600u, IIRC is 66.93. I'll try the VIA driver you spoke of. Thank you. |

Re: [XP Pro] Frequent BSODs in Win XP Pro SP2, please help Have youi tried to do a system restore from 2 weeks back? |
|
 | Re: [XP Pro] Frequent BSODs in Win XP Pro SP2, ple No, I did not do system restore, but I did do a clean reinstall of XP on a new hard drive, the WD Caviar SE.
Here are the mini dumps of the 4 BSODs I just got when I cold boot my PC. I've already removed Daemon tools yesterday. |
|
 | Ok....A few other questions. Have you gone through the BIOS and made sure everything is at default? Make sure you do not have memory at aggressive timings. Also, on the reinstall did you stop after the XP, SP2 and motherboard drivers and see if it was stable before anything else was loaded? That would rule out a driver issue. Are all of your PS voltages stable and near the true voltage on the +5, +12 and +3.3? I have also had a floppy that went bad and was pulling the 12v down and making the computer very unstable. Hope these items help. I really can't see anything in the mini dumps that point to one particular thing. |
|
 | I made sure in BIOS nothing is OC'ed, and even reset it with jumper. I installed the stuff I normally use after the clean install, e.g. Firefox, Thunderbird, Daemon tools, Nero, and a few others, so I don't really know. How do you check the voltages stuff you are talking about? Look at the health status in either the BIOS or via software like Speedfan or MBM5? What should I check for? I'm now testing my system with a new mobo, I'll report back. |
|
 | After changing the mobo, my system stopped getting BSODs...for a while. What happens instead is that, sometimes the screen would just freeze, though I can still move the cursor around. Then the screen would turn black, then on again and everything back to normal. This happens about once an hour or so. While this is a bit annoying, at least I'm not getting BSODs. Alas, it did not last; I just got the first BSOD after changing the mobo. Could you guys tell me how to view the minidump files? Thank you. Btw, my new mobo is a cheap PC Chip M811LU. |

| Here's a link on reading minidump files:
»support.microsoft.com/kb/315263/EN-US/
You can use WinDbg of the Debugging Tools for Windows to read Minidump files:
Here's a link, on setting up WinDbg, with screen shots:

Also, check the Event Viewer logs for clues to what is wrong (Start > Run > eventvwr).
Did you do a "repair" installation of XP, after switching motherboards? |
|
 | Thanks for the links auggy. I'm followed the instructions but still having problem to set it up properly.
An update to my barrage of errors: My screen still turn black from time to time, but instead of just shutdown and black screen, it now goes BSOD and almost always point to "nv4_disp.dll" as source of the problem. I've tried various versions of Nvidia drivers already, and I'm using the latest right now. For a while I thought it was the video card, but I put in a old one and the problem persisted.
I did not do a repair installation. After I swapped the mobo, xp booted just fine. I'm thinking about doing a reinstall, but activation is gonna be time-consuming (I've "used up" the # of internet activation allowed on my key grr...).
I've posted some new dumps, if anyone has time, please take a look. Thanks! |

| Since one your errors is a KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M probably caused by nv4_disp.dll, try what is suggested in the following MS KB article:
»support.microsoft.com/Default.as···&sd=RMVP
Try using the 56.72 drivers that have proved very stable for many users.
As suggested, after uninstalling the old drivers, install the new drivers in Safe Mode.
If you haven't already, update your VIA 4in1 drivers to the latest version.
Also, since you switched MB's, consider performing at least a "repair" install of XP. This will allow for a re-evaluation of hardware.

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to stilz2 Have you tried ALL the versions of nVidia drivers available for your card? I had infinite loop BSODs from the moment I got this Dell Nov 2003 with an nVidia card. I updated right away to what was the latest drivers at the time and that didn't help. The next several driver upgrades didn't help. Finally, the last two upgrades (61.77 and 66.93) have been good. No more infinite loop problems. It is ironic though because the card is old enough that the earlier drivers give better performance but I can't use them. -- The first and foremost function of our jurors is to protect private citizens from a tyrannical and intrusive government...Jurors are the last line of defense for liberty. |
 | Still a no go. I've tried the 56.7 and 66.93 drives, removed in safe mode, reboot, cleaned with Driver Cleaner Pro, installed in safe mode, problems persist. I've also installed the VIA 4in1 latest driver. Could you elaborate on the "repair" install? What I did is boot with the XP cd and get into repair mode, and I have no idea what to do in the command line mode. Thanks.
BTW, I'm close to wanting to do a reinstall again, but the thing is I'll have to call to activate if I do a reinstall. Is there a way to store the activation record somewhere and port it into the next one? |
|
 | I've just tried a new installation of Win XP and still having the same problem. Then I tried a different video card, and same stuff happens. This just doesn't make any sense at all. I've pretty much replaced everything in my computer except the case. Could you guys suggest other versions of driver to try out? I'm now thinking maybe it's the motherboard simply doesn't like the driver or something. BTW, could someone point out where the 'edit' button is? Thanks. |

After your new installation of XP, when did you start getting the BSOD's again? Was it after you installed all your third party programs? |

2 edits | Re: [XP Pro] Frequent BSODs in Win XP Pro SP2, ple I have yet to get a BSOD in the new installation, but still having the the screen turn black issue, but I have not used that installation much so I can't conclude it's stable. The only things I've installed so far is the Nvidia 56.93 driver and nothing else. It seems I've found the way to reproduce the problem of screen turning black--I just have to be scrolling a lot. For example, if I scroll very quickly in either a folder window or browser, with either the scroll button on mouse or keyword, the screen would turn black then back to normal. I'm beginning to think that the above problem could be unrelated to the BSOD/shutdowns, but I could be very wrong. I've tried swapping out even the CPU now, currently running a Duron 1.6ghz. Finally, could faulty hard drives cause BSOD/shutdowns? Thanks.
edit: the most recent BSOD happened when I was burning a CD (the burn failed obviously). I don't know if that's any indication. |
