Where to buy in LA or SFO ?

Coming from Europe, I plan to stay very few time in LA and San Francisco in May.
Is there goods (and cheap) shops downtown to buy video card such as ATI or Geforce AGP models.
Buying through the web cause too many problem when sending out of North America.
Any suggestion welcome.

Maybe check out Frys Electronics. Burbank might be the closest. »www.frys.com/burbank.html or depending on your location there are others. »www.frys.com and click on Store Hours & Locations.

There are probably other places to look also. Maybe PC Club »www.pcclub.com/stores.cfm or any other stores?

San Gabriel valley is littered with numerous smaller shops (primarily Chinese companies). Take a look at this link and you can find shops that sell what you need in this area. City of Industry, La Habra, Monterey Park, Walnut, etc.

Thanks for helping me.
I will be for a very short time near Union Station in LA.
I hope to find time to go on the way to San Gabriel Valley.
Pricewatch has very good links.

If you're going to be here for a few days, you can order from newegg.com and have it delivered to you (or the place that you're staying).

I'll have to chime in for Fry's and PC Club..even Best Buy will have a good price but less selection....stay away from CompUSA ...they are in cahoots with Satan

If you have transportation in/around Los Angeles, I'd suggest doing a will-call for MWave.com (Walnut, ~20 miles East of downtown off the 60 Fwy). Very competitive prices, and you can walk out the door with your item.

Ouch ! ...Thanks all guys, you are very clever and very helpful with me.
This travel will be my first time into the US, starting from LA coming straight from Paris, and ending at San Francisco. (Weeding 35 years marriage ..), but we will stay only one day in LA before going to Las Vegas and then to National Parks.
I will have a car, but not to much time to go far. Not familiar with US roads and signals (lol).

Maybe the best is to phone to my Hotel one month before and ask if they can accept to receive and keep safe my order.?

A hotel should be willing to accept deliveries for guests with future reservations. You can place orders for Fry's Electronics at »www.outpost.com Outpost is their on-line store. Pay by credit card and use the hotel's shipping address.

I'd be careful buying from Fry's. If you notice, the items that has white or yellow lables on them are previous returns. They don't even discount returned items. They are repackaged and sent out to the shelves again. Make sure what you buy is name brand and ask about their return policy.

They DO discount returned items although it isn't a big discount, perhaps 5 per cent. They always tag returned items and apply the discount even if they are returned unopened. Fry's has been completely above-board about returns.

I completely agree about checking the return policy on anything purchased anywhere. Fry's generally allows 30 days complete refund on items returned undamaged with all the original packing and parts. However, some types of items are 15 days (CPUs, memory, laptops) and some items are not returnable if opened, but may be exchanged if defective (software, music).

Myself, I never buy returned goods either. It's not worth the puny discount to get something with somebody else's paw prints on it.

Hey, welcome to LA!

I also recommend Fry's Electronics or Best Buy. You can check out the sales ads in the LA Times newspaper (»www.latimes.com scroll down to the Newspaper Ads in the left column). Fry's prints out their big 4-page ad on Fridays. Best Buy has their ad inserts on Sundays.

As with return items at Fry's... yes, stay away from them. These items will be marked with a white sticker somewhere on the box (usually on the front), and the discount is not worth it.

Have fun during your visit. And watch out for the crazy drivers out there.

Order a day before you come from newegg.com

They get stuff to me in 1 day if I order in the morning
I get an order once a week.

If you insist on a store frys has a lot but the prices are high & I have had problems with their stuff, I use them as a last resort for parts needed NOW

Have a great trip

I will take care of all suggestions. I couldn't reach by phone LA hotel yesterday evening (Not sure they have my reservation yet ), but will ask them asap.
My guess is to buy an ATI based chip X800 Pro (AGP) 256mB mem. It is an expensive card here.

Your help is welcome.
