1 edit | trying to connect to Airport Express
I'm on a PC and my roommate has an AirPort Express. First of all my PCI adapter is a Netgear WG311 v2 and the configuration utility kept crashing my computer, so I'm just using XP Pro's built in configuration thing.. which is troublesome by itself, I can't even connect to an unsecure network without setting it up to be a preferred network and then restarting the whole computer. (I'm on that neighbors network now ) She's using WEP, 13 characters and I'm entering that in but it doesn't work..can someone offer some advice please? |

| The first thing to check would be whether her AirPort Express is using "Shared" or "Open" authentication.
I have no experience with Apple products, but that'd be my first guess.
If right now you're using Shared, try switching over to Open, or vise versa.
That should be an advanced option in the Windows XP connection utility. -- The new Secure-Wifi.net is open! My Blog |

| reply to laura I tried that.. I also disabled and enabled "enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network"
I don't get why the Windows utility won't connect when I click connect.. even to the unsecure network.. it just says "connecting" for a minute or so and then the box disappears and nothing.. unless I restart, then it connects (but not the one I want to connect to!) I dunno if that has anything to do with my problem.. -- formerly known as cutemer02 teh site "Sex is not meant to be fun or something to do." -imtim83 |

| reply to laura Wep has to use either 10char's (64bit), or 26char's (128bit) in order to work. I would try a Winsock fix if having problems getting online. | reply to laura Laura,
Delete your profile for the problem AP Then reboot Then when the computer comes back up, click on Show Available Networks Choose the problem AP and reconnect to it
If the WEP key for the problem AP is in ASCII and has any special characters (*&^%$#@!), you may need to translate that into HEX. Different brands translate these characters differently.
If the key is: bread&butter You may need to type: 627265616426627574746572
There is a javascript ascii hex calculator here (does not send any data): »www.vortex.prodigynet.co.uk/misc···onv.html
... or if you don't like that one, just search Google for "ascii hex javascript calculator" or "ascii hex javascript converter" ... -- Robb Topolski http://www.funchords.com/ Hillsboro, Oregon USA |

| reply to laura OK, I entered the key in HEX. First of all, now I'm able to connect to the unsecure network WITHOUT setting it up to be "preferred" and restarting. WHY? I have no idea why it didn't work before.
So I entered the key in HEX for the network I want to use and it said it wouldn't assign me a network address, so I had "limited or no connectivity".. I assume I have to do something with the router now? I have the password for the AirPort, can I download the admin utility for Windows and do something with that? For the record, my roommate can connect with her Powerbook fine. -- formerly known as cutemer02 teh site "Sex is not meant to be fun or something to do." -imtim83 |

| I would Laura download the Apple utility from Apple for Airport. Try turning off the Wifi connection and back on to get rid of Limited. I get the same thing with mine when connecting first time for the day, and afterwards no problems. -- One man's customer loyalty is another man's misguided arrogance. |

| reply to laura Finally got it working. I disabled WEP, was able to connect. Then I enabled it again..and I was able to get on with the key (using ASCII chars by the way).. maybe she was spelling it wrong..
Also does the wifi card "shut down" when the computer goes on standby? I know it does on my laptop, but the thing is I dont think my desktop goes to standby.. I think the hard drives might turn off though.. I'm asking because I left my computer on all night and I had been on AIM but the connection was lost. -- formerly known as cutemer02 teh site "Sex is not meant to be fun or something to do." -imtim83 |

| It can power down if you choose to allow in the settings. I turned it off on mine, due to I use my laptop on AC all the time and do not need powersaving turned on. -- One man's customer loyalty is another man's misguided arrogance. |
