| Why Is OOL Selectively Blocking Bit Torrent Packet
In the last few days I SUDDENLY cannot upload a single bit to another using Bit Torrent (BT) technology. People connect for a few seconds and then disappear. There is nothing wrong with my end. I am well versed in port forwarding and firewalls. This behavior is duplicated at a friend's house that had a stable setup on OOL. I have used two different BT clients. Connected Surfboard 4200 modem using USB directly to computer, bypassing my router. I have shut off my software firewall and made sure Windows firewall was off.
I just read a forum post about Cox Cable doing the exact same thing. I know that OOL was blocking uploads on WINMX last Summer and now it appears that they are aggressively targeting BT users.
»Cox dropping (not blocking) P2P traffic
This is ridiculous. Bit Torrent can be used for legitimate purposes and I don't want to hear the TOS server crap. I have given OOL thousands in business but they are about to lose many thousands more in future business if they do not stop this sneaky, underhanded, and uncalled for tactic.
PUT SOME MONEY INTO YOUR UPLOAD INFRASTRUCTURE AND FORGET ABOUT HANDCUFFING PAYING CUSTOMERS, MANY OF WHOM BOUGHT YOUR SERVICE TO USE JUST FOR P2P APPS.
I would not miss 20%-25% less download speed if you would be fair with the upload speed
Trying to finance your bullshit Anti-Football Stadium commercials at the expense of your PAYING customers is BAD BUSINESS

And profanity riddled insults are going to get them to change their policies how?
One day "power users" are going to realize that OOL is ALWAYS going to cater to the overwhelming majority of their customer base that either doesn't upload or doesn't care about it enough to consider canceling service.
If they can continue to satisfy them they have absolutely no incentive to add upload capabilities for the really minuscule number of customers who need it. Is it right? Maybe not, but its fact.
Cancel your service and tell them its because of crappy uploads and you'll see nothing but crocodile tears from them as they usher you to the door. -- "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum" - Flavius Vegetius Renatus, c. 390AD |

I just switched from SBC to OOL a couple of months ago.

Its a know fact that most ISPs are blocking default bit torrent ports..
Change the ports on your bit torrent client and see if it helps |

Im having the same problem with it just happened maybe 5 - 10 days ago. I dunno what they are thinking of themselves. If they continue doing these little things all the time they will surely lose over 50% of their costumers once FIOS gets here. If I were in their position I would certainly do my best so the people wouldnt recognize FIOS as an upcoming competition. There just messing their reputation up and dont even realize it.
Btw I changed my ports to any random number and Im still having the same problem.
One more thing intocable if you keep uploading at 116 kb/s its just a matter of time before you get capped. |

| i been capped 7 times already and just use my lil tactic to get it uncapped without tech support returning a call. but anyways i usually seed a full-blown speeds from 2pm-6pm with a maybe a half an hour break. i been doing this for a months. i use bit-lord as my client. -- THOU SHALL KEEP THY RELIGION TO THYSELVES. | The strange thing is that when I am downloading I am able to upload normally. As soon as the torrent switches to 100% and is seeding then no one can connect for more than a second and then they disappear. Then zero bits are uploaded over HOURS. It does the same thing at a friend's house but I tested it on a Business OOL connection and there is no problem using Bit Torrent and seeding.
Sorry about the cursing, but I was pretty mad and feel like they are being petty with this policy. This might only be limited to the Huntington area on Long Island for now or limited to certain customers--who knows?
If you start seeing "Waiting For Handshake" a lot when uploading, then your BT packets are being dropped also |

3 edits | reply to mocks1 I'm having this same issue as of this morning! I am able to download but uploads are not occurring.... WTF?
Correction, on files/torrents I have created, I can not upload. On ones I am downloading, the torrent is sending information back, how could that be?
edit 2: I have had my ports open (I use non-standard 49001) for torrents. I have successfully created and uploaded a torrent as recently as 2/16 and now I can not.
edit 3: was this the trick?: "disconnect your modem from your ethernet card and call tech support and tell them for some reason you cant get online..." - page 10 of other thread. |
