Re: Just one more....

Ah, guess I misunderstood. I thought you were implying that it was the Vonage user's fault for not tatooing the local emergency number to their forehead, and believing that 9-1-1 would be working when they would need it.

You misunderstood....

Vonage needs the "real number", the dispatch agency/company has to give vonage the "real number" or they can't set their part of the 911 system up. This isn't a customer issue.

When our dispatch center went to E911 and cell phones started to get used more wide spread, some of the cell carriers here had to struggle to get the "real number" to 911 given to them so they could setup their 911 service so until they received that magic number, all the cell phone calls were routed to the state patrol dispatch 100 miles away and they patched the call to the county dispatch.

To get "any" phone to contact the proper 911 dispatch center all that is needed by whoever is in charge of routing the call is the actual number for the area that is "911". 911 isn't magic, it has a regular phone number.
The problem though, is that the fact of dialing 9-1-1 is "magical" of it's own right. It's simple enough to pitch the idea to even the youngest of children, and uncomplicates matters. Even if you informed all the members of your household what the real number of 911 was in their area...could/would they remember that when the time comes? Or what happens if you're alone with a family guest, and a medical emergency leaves you incapacitated, while the guest frantically tries to figure out WTF the local emergency number is?

Well guess what, in that time of hesitation/confusion, lives are on the line. Thus the need for a VERY simple solution when there are lives on the line.

If the number that gets displayed at the dispatch center has the wrong address data attached to that phone number then yes it can be a vonage issue. Contacting 911 with you vonage phone shouldn't be a vonage issue unless someone won't give vonage the proper "real number" for "911" for an area.

Be aware that a lot of E911 dispatch centers are in private companies hands, not a public agency, so there's no telling who could be pulling their strings at times.
