| ADSL2+ vs. ADSL speed/distance graph? A while back, I saw posted here a graph which plotted the ADSL2+ speed/distance curve vs. the regular ADSL speed/distance curve. I've done some searching and can't seem to turn up the topic in which it was posted. I thought it was in one that mentioned Lightspeed, but I can't find it. Anyone know where I can find that graph? |

The uhhh, search function up on the upper right found me this in just 20 seconds of fishing around. -- Nothwest Arkansas' ONLY all Techno Radio Webcast, powered by SBC DSL! |

Was that it? It was indeed from one of d_l's posts. |

Some of those graphs were based on the very best case scenario for ADSL2+. Subsequent testing of ADSL2+ isn't so rosy.
This isn't what you were looking for, but it is a very depressing graph for ADSL2+. It is a realistic assessment of ADSL2+ speeds when there are other DSL customers in your cable bundle. It is based on the assumption that your copper pair is one of 25 in the cable bundle. It shows how your speeds will be impacted as more and more pairs in that cable bundle are used for ADSL2+. Increased crosstalk interference at the highest frequencies (greater than 1.1 MHz) is the reason that the sync speeds will be pulled down.
This is why fiber needs to be extended closer to your home and the copper length shortened. |

| That one is actually a bit more optimistic than the one I was specifically thinking of, which was linked in the first reply to this post. That one does show the often overlooked crosstalk problem, which I understand is even a problem currently, just not to the same degree as it will be with the higher frequencies involved in higher bitrate types of DSL.
I had been thinking that it was really a wash, going SBC's way of further expansion of DSL, but then I read someone's point that with FIOS, as an example, the outside plant is completely passive, an advantage over even cable's HFC network. In cases of power outage, this is a significant advantage, especially for people who would be willing to invest in a large UPS to run the CPE. One of the best things about a CO line is the large battery plant and on site generator that keeps the phone service operating regardless of the power company's situation. I could easily run my laptop (or my desktop with a Mobile Athlon and an LCD screen) and the fiber CPE for days on a moderately sized UPS, probably better than a week with not much more effort.
In areas subject to extensive ice storms cutting off utility power for long periods of time, the time an RT can run on batteries alone is not enough.
I wonder if most COs seeing a significant decrease in overall power loads due to the use of digital switches and offloading of much of the OSP power loads to off site utility power have reduced their battery capacity or not.
It'll be interesting to see what speeds I actually end up getting at 7kft, especially if as many of the neighbors as have DSL (which is a lot, judging from the number of 2wire WiFi devices one sees where I live) eventually have the ADSL2+ service.
The only thing that really bugs me about ADSL2+ is the lack of significant upstream bandwidth. That and the probability of not being able to purchase most of the available bandwidth for use as an Internet connection, instead having it segmented off for TV use. Seems to me to be a case of wanting to do too much with too little bandwidth..I like speed. |

d_lBarsoomPremium,MVM join:2002-12-08 Reno, NV kudos:7 | reply to wierdo The lack of increased upload speed for ADSL2+ is for Annex A and I believe it is primarily to stay backwards compatible with ADSL. There is Annex M (I think I've got the right alphabet letter there) that allows use of POTS frequencies to boost the upload speeds. Obviously this would have to be a dry loop service. |
