I have just managed to use BT Broadband with an AT&T client connector by buying a new router: D-Link ADSL Wireless Router and configuring the PPPoA but not an IT person, I work in a press office so not easy to do for an average end user!
Essentially you need to take the proxy server off, link to the router IP address (in the booklet with the router), use the BT settings:
User name: first.surname@btbroadband.com
Password: BT
Change the encapsulation to VC
Ensure it says PPPoA not bridge, PPPoE etc
Bit trial and error but I got there so it does work!
Bought the router from PC World but if you chat to their service desk and get them to sign the back of your receipt they will enable you to get a full refund if it doesn't work so if you can spend £70 ish it will work so worth it in longer term savings on dial up?

DNS = auto
VPI = 0 (zero)
VCI = 38
Authentication = CHAP
Modulation = G.DMT
Encapsulation = VC MUX
Encapsulation Protocol = PPPoA, whether USB modem or Ethernet router
Not sure where the Authentication and Modulation come into the setting up of the WAG54G (probably handled behind the scenes) but once I’d changed the Encapsulation it seemed to work. Actually, all the settings above are the default for the WAG54G – so it might have been something to do with the email address/password used to log on the BT Yahoo. For others, remember its your.name@**1.btinternet.com (i.e. john.smith@js1.btinternet.com).

One thing to keep in mind is after you make a change, you have to go to the status page and click "connect." Provided you've got your username and password typed in correctly from your ISP, everything should connect.
Additionally, you might want to have your ISP assign you a static ip address, and you also might want to sign up with a dynamic dns provider. I use www.webreactor.net (free dns) and you can have an account issued and ready to use within 3 minutes. I did these two things because I noticed that my provider kept changing ip's every 24hrs and my router kept dropping its connection. Now, when the ip changes, people can still connect to my ftp server, alleviating me from reconfiguring every morning.
Since then, I've had no problems and I'm using the original firmware that the router came with. Once you've found a baseline for your network, try these couple of things and see if that helps (laffalot and I bought our WAG54G's around the same time). |

Moved this out to a topic on it's own.
I have this exact same modem/router so should be able to help you out.
First of all how are you connecting to the net, hardwired or wireless?
Have you followed the instruction leaflet included with the router, gives you step by step guide?
You need to follow the 'RFC 2364 PPPoA' section and the 'RFC 1483' section.
If you provide more specifics I can try and talk you through it.

I too have a BT YAhoo broadband account and have just bought a Linksys WAG54G but I can't get connected to the internet. I'm currently trawling the net but can't find any info anywhere.
Would be most appreciated if you could let me know what settings you have.
