| reply to Vihana Re: Rumor: SBC lowering prices
Thanks d_l, pa555, and Boricua65. I called and it went fine after some hold time. But I just kept my headphones on and did other things until the agent decided to answer. Then she cheerfully rerated my monthly charge to $19.95 for another year. And I can continue to proclaim: I will never accept that SBC Yahoo big brother crap. |

| reply to Vihana To Vihana : you don't need to install that bloatware. I installed the Enternet 300 to a friend of mine's PC, and he hasn't had any problems. I even told him not to install that other crap. As for me, I use a wireless router that does the PPPoE. |

| reply to Vihana said by Vihana :Thanks for all the information posted here in the past six weeks or so. It's just what I came to find, and tomorrow, I'll call and get my $49.95 fee reduced to $19.95 (fingers crossed)...as it was last year. But here's my question: I've had SBC pacbell.net since 1999 or 2000 and never upgraded to the Yahoo connection. Does that make any difference? I never upgraded to the Yahoo connection & still have my @pacbell.net address. I never upgraded because I didn't feel that extra software they was giving out was needed with my set-up..... Don't want or need a lot of thing running in the background or did I want to use there browser.....

| reply to Vihana It doesn't make a difference if you haven't upgraded to Yahoo. Lots of us have never migrated and have changed speed plans/prices over the years.
What would make a difference is if you had a grandfathered static IP. Sometimes changing speed plans (or rates) will cause a loss of the IP is not done correctly by the CSR. |

| reply to dsl_upgr Well now this is very odd and inconsistency with "customer service dept. or whoever takes renewals and new orders. I was one who tried to renew the Pro at 29.99 and got it. The person who took my renewal "existing customers" may qualify if they are willing to renew for another year from the date the renewal takes place. They were concern with keeping existing customers happy and providing "EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE"..... go figure.....
With that promotion, the fine print did read new and existing customers qualify. It's unfortunate that SBC can not remain consistent in their policy regarding existing customers regarding renewals. |

Factoring in the 15% loss due to overhead, the best you'll see is 1305 kbps throughput. Since you're used to cable speeds, I'm surprised you didn't go for SBC's 3.0Mbps plan for $29.99. |

1 edit | reply to Trying to help First find your 3 digit code on your telephone bill. Call 1-877-722-3755 Say Yes if you are calling from home or Say No and punch in your dsl phone number Say Billing Say Change Service Tell this live person to transfer you to DSL Retention Tell this person you wanna rerate to 19.95 with no "all distance plan" They will need your name on bill and the 3 digit code. They will start typing for about 5 minutes and then your done.
Worked for me, at first I was told that it's only for new customers, or existing customers on the "All Distance" plan. I was also told that their system wouldn't allow them to change the rate. However, after I mentioned that I had two cable providers that offered HS internet, the CSR did me a "favor" and "tried" to enter it in the system. By some miracle it worked |

| reply to jmorlan Well, I couldn't pass this deal up. I've been paying $60 a month for cable with great speeds, 4040kbps down, 330 up, but for $40 less a month I can live with slower speeds. I'm about 1000' from the CO so I expect close to 1500kbps. I haven't received my package yet, but someone came by today to check the connection at the drop. I don't have long distance with SBC, I get long distance free with my cell phone. |

| reply to jamesly They need to put me on an RT for the Pro package. I was disconnected on March 28th and they called yesterday to notify me that it wasn't completed yet, but the CSR was going to call me today again to update me on the status.
If it turns out that my home wiring (old wiring) can't handle the speeds, how much does it cost to re-wire your house and does SBC do it? BTW i have DSL on a Splitter at my house, does that help?
thanks! |

| reply to olddialup If I were you, I'd grab the $19.95 deal. It's hardly more than dialup and once you have it, you won't want to go back.
In your situation, I'd get the modem-only basic package. The SpeedStream 5100b is very nice and you can always add a router later if you need it. This modem does NAT but is not a real firewall and it is not a router. There is no stateful packet inspection that you would find in a full-fledged hardware firewall. You will probably want to keep your software firewall if you are happy with it.
I believe the current deal may be ending soon. It's actually $1 over wholesale and I think it is about the best deal SBC has ever offered to consumers. -- NewsPlex Discussion Group |

| reply to jmorlan I'm another guy that has had SBC for a long time now, with the static IP. They've always let me keep it everytime I renew. I called and asked for a re-rate/upgrade to the Pro package this time. It went through without a hitch. I forgot to ask if there would be any problems because I have one of the old static IP accounts. They didn't ask me and I'm not sure if they checked that aspect or not. The lady I spoke with said my DSL wouldn't even go down through the upgrade process.
What are they going to do if by chance they missed this fact? I really hope they don't call me back and say I can't get the upgrade without switching to the dynamic IP setup. I have the Alcatel 1000 modem and I think I'm pretty far from the CO, since last year they said I was too far to get the faster DSL. |

| reply to zeelurker I currently use dialup, and am fairly happy with the speed, but faster is better. I have one PC: 98SE. So, I do not need a network. And, am considering the $19.95/mo SBC DSL since it is about the same price as my extra phone line and ISP.
1. The basic package ($99) is a modem only. For $149, you get a wireless router. I wonder if I really need the wireless router: a. I have ZA (free version), which is blocking ports. b. I will not use the wireless capability, and do not want to accidentally turn it on and create a security problem. c. I understand that some modems do NAT, which provides firewall security, right? I wonder if the SBC supplied modem does NAT? On the other hand: a. There could be a vulnerability when I reboot (before ZA starts running), using modem. |

| reply to glc650 Do they want to put you on an RT for the Pro package? The first CSR said yes they did have to do that. And that required a disconnect/reconnect. I ended up not having to change anything. As I am still on the Static IP and connected to my CO. BTW, when I did call, I followed the instructions posted elsewhere here as to the actual phone number and menu entries to get to DSL retention. Look around in this forum and you'll find it. It seemed like the most direct route. |

| reply to jmorlan I think it's unusual that they let you keep your original static IP at the new rate. As do I. Mind you I did make a "stink" somewhat. Not that I have any need for the static IP. I don't run any servers etc.. That's just how they did it back in the 90's I just didnt want to suffer a 1-2 week downtime to get a faster speed. So I called again, which is always a good idea when dealing with a customer service issue like this with large Call Centers.
I was very reluctant to switch plans at all. The first rep I spoke with, said in order to move from standard to Pro I HAD to disconnect / reconnect. No matter what.
Or I could go to the same speed I had at the 19.95 rate with just a ReRate. I was kinda upset mind you as I have been paying $49.95 for 6 years to get 768 dsl. AND I happen to have the ALL Long Distance plan wiht them too! (Or whatever it's called) So I was really hoping to get a faster connection if I was going to go through the hassle of calling and dealing with it. The rep I finally spoke with was very very nice and helpful, Her name was Cecilia in Riverside. |

| reply to DSLcabmod I was able to receive the PRO package at the 29.95 rate without a disconnect. I have a static IP and connection to the CO. I'd say call again and again until you're sure thats the deal.. I have had DSL here since 1999, so I have a static IP and connection to the CO. I called once 4-5 weeks ago when I first heard of the new rates. (I dont stay on top of these things) And the CSR said I would have to be disconnected and reconnected to an RT. I didnt really want to do that... I then called again 2 weeks ago and spoke to a rep that went and checked at my request to verify if I had to disconnect or not, while I waited on hold. She came back and said she spoke with "Maintenance" and said that due to my distance (or closeness) to the CO they could just re-rate me. I also complained LOULDLY that I had been a customer since 1999 and had never been offered the new lower rate. Everything has gone pretty well so far. I never experienced an outage and after some tweaking thanks to the telco reps here, my speeds are in the 2400's and I'm paying about HALF what I was. Hope that helps. James |

| reply to artimeg I called about a week ago and the rep told me that i qualified for the Pro but that i needed to be reconnected to an RT. So my DSL will be down for 2 weeks while the disconnect me from the CO. and move me to an RT. Hopefully this will work. If not thean I guess I just renewed my contract at no additional benifit to me (i.e no greater speed and no lower rate.)
I've also tried re-rating my fathers connection at his office but they said that its a business line and that he can't get that rate. but he's gotten 29.99 before and now they want to charge him 36.99.
i've also been trying to get these rates for my friends but i keep getting put on hold and i only have 2 days left! |
