Wow - took me only 5 minutes. Thanks for the steps.
I was seriously considering Comcast HSI with their latest deal. I'd put the numbers in a spreadsheet for Comcast + Vonage vs. SBC, and Comcast was $125 cheaper.
But then I came here and read about this latest deal. At $10/month chepaer, the Comcast deal was only better by $5 for the year - definitely not worth the switch away from my currently highly-reliable DSL. |

| reply to jmorlan just thought I'd add to the general FYI I called the # that came in the pamphlet: 1-8000-793-4713 and spoke with a rep almost immediately. I was previously paying for 39.95 for DSL deluxe. I went and asked for the new price of 29.99 and when I asked for the price without the "all distance" (vm long distance etc on the land line) it was cheerfully offered. The whole process took about the same amount of time it took me to compose this post! Here's a link with details. »www.sbcinfo.com/dslpro/dslPro_LP···&type=CD Lots of other ISPs are doing this. Also: for those of you in Sacramento/Roseville. etc. Surewest is doing the same thing »www.surewest.com/faster/ |

1 edit | reply to jmorlan I have been able to confirm that existing customers on a lower package than Pro should now be able to upgrade to current promo via normal channels at this time, as long as the line qualifies for an upgrade. There should be No need to ask for retention on Upgrades to Pro to get onto this promo.
Regarding Re-rates if you already have Pro, I still have no clear direction on that other than The promo is not Supposed To Be available to existing Pro customers.
Upgrade OK, New Customer OK, existing Pro Customer Currently not OK for the current promo.
Edit- bolded the not above. |

| reply to jmorlan I've got the 5-static IP residential service (month to month). I'm going to get rid of it because I can run my server somewhere else (still w/ SBC though) and have been considering the Pro package. I saw on the SBC website that if you sign-up you can get a $99 credit towards various items. If I already have DSL service, but want to sign up for the year contract at the 29.99, do I still get the $99 credit to apply towards the hardware?

| Well, seems like I am going to have to start mentioning this site to EPC folks in other conversation again. Of the 3 reps I knew who posted here for things like this, 2 have since left the company and the other does not spend much time here anymore.
redsonrising , according to the rep I just spoke to 800-793-4713 if you upgrade you qualify for the $99 off by upgrading. -- It truly is the lowest level where we ALL make the difference. |

2 edits | reply to jmorlan Interesting developments today. Turns out my contract doesn't expire until next month, and this months bill(78.94) is actually for March *and* April!?!? Anyway csr roulette wasn't as favorable for me. Billing was first..said I could either cancel existing a re-sign up over the net to get the 19.95 price(isn't there an early cancellation fee?), or I can renew at current 36.95. She claimed she didn't have the authority to give me the promo rate WITHOUT the All Distances package included. She did mention only Retention could assist me on that, and connected me. Retention repeated Billing, saying I wasn't able to get the new promo rate, and keep my existing long distance package(~$4-5/month). He did say if I *did* want $29.99, the only way was to re-up WITH All Connections, which would raise my long distance up to ~$20/month!! No deal there, as I make maybe one long distance call a month. Best he'd offer was re-upping at current 36.95. So it looks like Toaster is (surprise) right again! :P Congrats to those it did work for. I'm looking into Comcrap tonight to see what my options are. :/ -- SBCPacbell ProPackage Avg. of last 10 tests: 2552dn/354up Not too shabby! |

| reply to jmorlan I've been on PacBell/SBC DSL for close to 4 yrs in my current location. Still paying $49 per month for the basic service. it's a long story, but involves my company covering it. Anyway, since they were obviously willing to pay the price, I wasn't going to pick up the LD plans to get the better rates back when that was the deal. Since based on this thread it seems that's not a requirement anymore, I was going to re-up with 3MB service (save my company $ and make me happier ). But the catch is that I'm moving in about 3 months--but just across the street. I'll definitely take my phone number with me, but are there any implications for the upgrade? Would it be better to wait until I move or can I do it now and then have it move with me at the higher speed? |

| reply to jmorlan Howdy Stang- I'd proceed with the upgrade at the new rate, and worry about the move at that time. It'll obviously still be in SBC territory(no cancellation fee), and although possible, it's unlikely the 'cross-the-street' move changes your profile. I'd say enjoy the benefits now, and deal with any issues when/if they crop up. HTH, G'Luck! -- SBCPacbell ProPackage Avg. of last 10 tests: 2552dn/354up Not too shabby! |

| I called SBC DSL retention to re-rate to $19.95. It was fast and easy. Last summer I lowered my $49.95 mo./mo. cost to $26.95 thru tip found here. I'm doubly pleased to get another discount.
While I re-rated I asked for a new SpeedStream 5100b modem. Was told it would be free, with only a shipping cost of $12.95. They sent 2Wire 1800HG Wireless Gateway by mistake. SBC will charge me $50 if I keep it. Or I can send it back and get the free 5100b.
Not sure which to do. Started post: "best modem" for advice. |

2 edits | reply to jmorlan I resigned a new year long contract last month for their Express Tier. I called them to upgrade to the $29.99 Pro Tier. It wasn't a problem at all. I still have an old Westell Wirespeed modem from when I first signed up with them. I tried to get the $99 modem (hopefully 5100b) and the $99 credit. The guy wouldn't let me have it. I tried to tell him that maybe the faster speed wouldn't work with the old modem. He still wouldn't let me have it. I should have called the DSL Retension Dept. instead. )
Anyway, they said my line should be upgraded in a week. Yesterday, was one week. This morning, the upgrade wasn't in effect. Everyday, twice a day, since last Friday, I have been shutting down the modem to see if it syncs at the faster rate. It never did. I just had the same old download and upload. I called this morning, they said that it was done yesterday. They sent me to the Tech Dept. She said, "What did you use to test it." I said, "BroadbandReports.com" That always shuts them up. She looked at her computer and said, "Hmph. I have to call another dept." I held on the phone. She came back and said, "Ok. Try it again." This time, it tested at 834/35. At which point she started to tell me that everything was fine. It had already been upgraded. They tested my line, etc. Then she said, "We can send out a Tech but if the speed is fine for them, you will get billed for the service call." I do understand that this a Tier 1 Tech Support, but come on. So, of course, a power cycle cured it. I bet they just upgraded my speed when I called. I wonder if other people have paid for an upgrade to only receive a higher bill?
It's really a small inconvenience. Especially when I read about Tsunami, Earthquake, or shark attack victims. |

| reply to jmorlan Add 1 more success story. I do have the Long Distance plan though. But I am NOT a new customer. I didnt even get sent to DSL Retention. The woman in Billing - Change Service helped me . Took a total of 3 minutes to spend 3 bucks more for double speed. Will be ready in about a week she said
She also said it will show as 59.99 on my bill minus 30 rebate for a 1 year term. Love it |

| reply to jmorlan Just went through the process outlined here, and what to say to the Sales department covered here -- all worked exactly as has been documented in this thread. Zero problems. I also renewed my contract at the same time (for one more year), and I was promised no downtime as well. Just a pure billing change.
Be sure to have your SSN handy, as you'll be asked to confirm that.
Otherwise, just follow the instructions, and voila. Now if only SBC in Mountain View didn't run our copper around the edge of the town, I could've upgraded at the same time... :-( -- Making life hard for others since 1977. |
