 [Help Me] DWL-G810 and WPA/WEP (with DI-624)

Hi!

I've had my D-Link products a few months now but haven't got my wireless bridge/adapter (G810) to work correctly.

D-Link support (Sweden and EU) has been contacted several times to no avail. They have sent me a G810 replacement unit and a few firmwares but doesn't seem to care much about my problems. Their last reply was "Hi. Ok then you should use WEP enqryption. The thing is that WPA enqryption doesnt allways work but WEB allmoast allways work."

Since I wanted 108Mbps and WPA security I bought only D-Link products, hoping that would minimize compatibility problems etc. Yeah right...

Here's my wireless equipment:

D-Link DI-624 (HW Rev C3)
Current Firmware Version: 2.52
Firmware Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004
(also tried v2.44, v2.45 and v2.50)

D-Link DWL-G810 (HW Rev C1, EU version)
Current Firmware Version: 3.10
Firmware Date: Wed, 29 Dec 2004
(also tried v2.15 and v3.00)

D-Link DWL-G650 (HW Rev C2)
Driver 3.17 (2003-11-11)

All devices in infra mode
Extended range disabled
802.11g only mode enabled
SSID broadcast enabled
All devices and clients on the same subnet (192.168.1.x)
Static IP on all devices and clients
Tested with and without MAC filtering
Tested with SuperG dynamic-turbo/static-turbo/no-tubro/off
Wireless TX rates set to auto
3 PCs connected to the DI-624
1 XBOX directly connected to the DWL-G810 (also tested with a laptop)
XBOX Media Center is used as dashboard and everything is working fine if physically connected to the network

Results with WPA-PSK:
G810 connects after a while (paedisconnect error messages is logged on the DI-624).
As soon as the XBOX is started the G810 dies.
Rebooting the G810 does not help as long as the XBOX is on.
Same behaviour with laptop connected to G810.
Laptop with G650 is working excellent.

Results with WEP (128bit, shared key):
Bad performance, long ping delays, dropped ping packets, etc.
Laptop with G650 is working excellent.

Results with no encryption:
Seems to work ok but I haven't tested it alot since I need some kind of security (several wireless networks in my neighbourhood).

Since the G650 is working it must be something with the G810. I've tested the G650 in diffrent locations (and rooms) and while the connection speed goes up and down it never experience the same problems as the G810 does.

Any ideas before I send the G810 back to D-Link?

Are there any other wireless bridges with WPA and SuperG-compatibility? Preferably tested with DI-624...

Thanks!

I'm using channel 6 which is default (and cannot be changed in SuperG mode).

I have contacted D-Link support today. The tech support told me that there are issues related to the WPA-PSK for DWL-G810 (F/W 2.15). I know that WPA-PSK works without issues on a Dell notebook with build-in wireless card through my DI-624 (rev C3, F/W 2.50) wireless router. I guess before D-Link releases the next firmware for DWL-G810, we will have to stick with WEP 128-bit security level and enabling the MAC filter.

(Note: I never managed to get the WPA-PSK to work on DWL-G810 at all.)

First rule of WPA-PSK -- change your SSID, don't switch back and forth your security methods and keep the same SSID.

G810 connects after a while (paedisconnect error messages is logged on the DI-624).
This means that the router has detected a security problem with the G810 and has disconnected it.

A rebooting router or a rebooting DWL-G810 will cause this.

After a session of configuring the DI-624 in WPA mode, you seriously need to unplug it for a few seconds to clear out any lockouts. I would do the same for the DWL-810.

The way that WPA-PSK works is that there is an initial authentication attempt and then up to 3 retries -- all separated by 60 second intervals (that's 4 minutes).

Either the client or the AP can cause the retry because the authentication is double-blind.

So, to recap

-- don't use the same SSID for different encryption methods.

-- once you have your settings the way you want them, power cycle the hardware and reboot the computers.

So, as soon as anything is connected to the DWL-G810, it dies? What does "it dies" mean? It disconnects? Can't configure?

I'm not sure where to start with that.

Robb, thanks for the replies!

I'll test your tips regarding diffrent SSIDs. And I'll make sure to unplug the devices for a few seconds afterwards.

With "dies" I mean it stops working and responding. No ping, no http, etc. Not until I turn the XBOX off and powercycle the G810... But it dies again as soon as I start the XBOX.

I'm curious: Has anyone ever got the G810 to work in WPA-PSK mode?

I have two G810's working with DI-624 but only with WEP. I have a couple of 802.11B cards that do not support WPA and I am out in the country so no close neighbors to worry about.

One G810 is on an Xbox and the other is on a PS/2. Both work fine and signal seems to be strong. My sons tell me that they do not experience any delay, hesitation or disconnects while playing online.

I did have to turn dynamic turbo mode off. I had problems connecting with this on, but once it was turned off all worked as expected.

Well, I have tried all sorts of combinations attempting to get WPA-PSK on the DWL-G810 to work (including above suggestions). The logs in the router DI-624 showed that there were communications between the router and the bridge, since an IP has been leased to DWL-G810, but the dreaded paeDISCONNECTED popped up throughout the log, therefore I could not get a wireless connection on my laptop. Again WEP works without any issues.

If the D-Link tech has been pulling my leg, I would like to see your configuration for your wireless router and the wireless bridge (DWL-G810 please), since it sounded like you have got it going.

basically my config on the di-624revc3 (tried with firmware 2.42, 2.50 and 2.52 since ive upgraded) is set to all defaults except for the ssid as test123, wpa-psk is 12345678 and the wan is dynamic since thats what my isp uses. for the bridge (reset to defaults, basically all my setup is at defaults except for what i mentioned, this one with firmware 2.15) i did a site survey and it showed the ssid, i typed in the psk of 12345678 applied and then also changed the network gateway to be 192.168.0.1, but this really doesnt matter. hooked up to xbox and statically assigned an address too. the only problem is that after a couple of days i have to power cycle the client to get it to connect, which is not a big problem.

Thanks for the information. I think the keyword in your set up for the bridge is "default". I managed to get WPA-PSK to work...but without the SuperG mode on the wireless router (DI-624, f/w 2.50). Again, it simply refused to work with SuperG. Have you tried activating SuperG mode (on the router) and it still works?
