Re: Cool!

Funny how that approach is taken with google but if MS would do the same thing it's a whole new ball park!

Re: Cool!

I earn a living working on Microsoft technology. As such, I keep MS bashing to a minimum. Having said that, I feel that Microsoft has certain responsibilities that come with being a market leader that Google, for now, does not.

It's sort of how we accept that there are people amongst us that can't tell the difference between 'your' and 'you're' or that a certain number of us will cheat on our wives....but we expect our presidents to adhere to a higher standard.

Just about every computer in the world runs Microsoft software, it seems. Including, I presume, some mission critical systems at the best and the brightest of American (and international) enterprises.

If all Microsoft systems were to crash all of a sudden, it would bring the world's economy to a screeching halt. If Google goes away, we can use another search engine, another webmail service or, GASP!, go back to looking things up the old fashioned way.

All I'm saying is, a certain amount of MS bashing is warranted because Microsoft appears to put money before everything else. That is in stark contrast to Google's hippie-style culture where everyone shares the love and gets high on new javascript from India.

Re: Cool!

Constructive criticism and intelligent posts are one thing and I agree there is no problem with this sort of "bashing" no matter what company it is or their position in the market.

However over looking majour security issues while saying "google is the best I love google". Whilst turning around and slamming MS for silly, insignificant things is insane.

People seem to forget that Windows is a product not a public service. They owe you nothing, yes the SHOULD do things because they are a market leader but that doesn't mean the legally HAVE TO.

Look at the DRM or whatever, in media player. This is a feature that is easily turned off and is circumevented by a click of a mouse button and by ignoring stupid files yet all hell breaks loose.

Turn the page and Google has a massive hole in it's email that allows anyone to access your personal inbox easily and it is okay because it's in "beta".

Re: Cool!

This sort of double standard has existed for years now, and it goes both ways. Microsoft has its fair share of fanboys, just like Google, and they will defend MS tooth and nail. Neither side is necessarily wrong, but they lack the objectivity it takes to see the situation for what it is. Two competitors vying for market share. Take your predispositions regarding good vs. evil out of the equation and you might be surprised at what you find.

...and before you go placing the 'evil' moniker anywhere, lets I remind you that Bill Gates is one of the largest contributors to charitable organizations in the world? Just a thought...

It's not OK because it's beta, it's OK because it's free. I don't expect anything from them. Microsoft on the other-hand I pay for my OS and thus I expect allot from them. Now if MS gave me the OS for free then it would be a different story.

"or that a certain number of us will cheat on our wives....but we expect our presidents to adhere to a higher standard."

No, i expect our presidents not to lie under oath and abuse their power as president to cover up cheating on their wives. (which is a federal felony) The fact that they cheat on their wives is inconsequential... It's the fact that they just dont fess up and move on that's of consequence.

As for M$. When it takes 3 months to address the ease of pfishing in their browser, i think we have reason to coplain.

Re: Cool!

Right but they messed up because they didn't pursue the perjury they proced on the sex.

THis just shows your ignorance when it comes to programming.

First of they have to research the problem, then write the code. They then have to make sure the code doesn't open new holes, fixes the old holes AND make sure it doesnt break any other programs, services etc. etc. etc.

3 months is nothing for an issue of that size.

Re: Cool!

They also audit similar code developed by the programmer who made the mistake in the first place. This allows them to close other holes that have yet to be found.
