| Were It Not for Calendaring
I would not have had to deploy Exchange for my company. The one big part of Exchange that every one of my users wanted was a shared calendar service. The iCal based calendar tools that are out there just haven't been 'ready for prime time'. If Google changes that, then it really lifts the need for Exchange, at least in situations like I was dealing with. I'd be especially happy if a good, integrated calendar server (with a good MAPI plugin) for Unix came out, because I then wouldn't need to have any Windows systems in my infrastructure.

Previously know as Corporate Time Calendar, it can be deployed as a Unix based solution. It has a shared calendar service, and would probably fit the bill for what you are looking at. |

See, we're a small startup. Exchange was expensive enough.
We also had two other considerations. One was the MAPI connectors; the other was ongoing maintenance. Any of the solutions we'd looked at as alternatives had basic issues with the MAPI connector. We also needed something that, once set up, we could be decently confident that a low-skilled individual would be able to keep running (as the rest of the consultants are on the road better than 60% of the time).
Oh well, too late now.
