19 registry entries AFTER the remover was ran!
Ad-Aware detected a cookie!
Uninstalled BearShare, ran the WhenU Remover provided by Lavasoft... informed me that WhenU was detected and asked if I wanted to remove it(DUH!) It then told me to restart so as to remove anything that may still be running. Restarted. Ran Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

19 Registry entries of WhenU were detected! The Remover FAILS!

WAY TO GO LAVASOFT!

I'm going to reimage my HDD now!

Hehehe, That's why I tried it on a test machine and not on my computer.

Ad-aware remains on my "not to be trusted" list

Thanks dadkins See Profile for posting a real world example of what most of us thought would happen. How anyone can continue to "trust" Lavasoft with a staight face is beyond my ability to understand. Not in bed with WhenU? Yeah, right!

END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT AND PRIVACY STATEMENT

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING TERMS AND CONDITIONS BEFORE DOWNLOADING, INSTALLING AND USING THE SAVE! BUNDLE (THE "SOFTWARE") PROVIDED BY WHENU.COM, INC. ("WHENU.COM"). USE OF THE SOFTWARE IS SUBJECT TO THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS SET FORTH IN THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT (THE "LICENSE AGREEMENT"). BY INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE YOU INDICATE YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS SET FORTH HEREIN. WHENU.COM RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REVISE THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT AND PRIVACY STATEMENT AT ANY TIME.

Functionality

WhenU.com's Save! software shows you relevant coupon offers, contextual information and services as you surf the Web. Save! attempts to display offers at the moment when they are most relevant to you. Offers and information are displayed in the form of interstitials ("pop-up ads") and various other ad formats.

The Save! software selects which ads and offers to display to individual users based on several factors, including: which Web pages you visit, search terms you use while searching online, content of the Web pages you view and your local zip code (if you have supplied it). Save! ads and offers are delivered in a separate, independent window controlled by WhenU.com, are not endorsed or affiliated with anyone other than WhenU.com and may in fact be competitive with some of the sites visited by the user while online.

Save! software enables users to receive advertising-supported versions of many popular software applications for free. Use of Save! is required to continue using these applications for free. As a result, Save! cannot be uninstalled from your computer's Control Panel independently. In order to completely remove Save! from your computer, you must uninstall all of the Save!-supported software from your computer. Once you do so, your Save! software will automatically be uninstalled as well.

The License

The software is licensed to you for your personal, non-commercial use only. Other than the rights expressly granted to you hereunder, no other right is granted to you. Without limitation, you may not: (a) modify or create any derivative works of the software or documentation; (B) decompile, disassemble, reverse engineer, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code for the software; or, without limitation, redistribute, sublicense, or otherwise transfer rights to the software.

Age Limitation
WhenU.com products and services are not available to individuals below the age of 13. By accepting this installation, you are representing that you are not a minor below the age of 13.

Disclaimer of Warranty

You expressly agree that the use of this software is at your own risk. The software is provided on an "As Is" basis, without warranty of any kind, including without limitation the warranties that it is free of defects and errors, fit for a particular purpose, or non-infringing. WhenU.com reserves the right to periodically update and/or upgrade the software at the company's discretion. Your installation of the software indicates your acceptance of potential future updates and/or upgrades to the software.

The information and services provided by the software and/or WhenU.com are similarly provided on an "As Is" basis, without warranty of any kind. The accuracy and reliability of any information content or services provided by the software and or WhenU.com should be independently verified by you as the user prior to making purchase decisions and or any other decisions based on such information content and services.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, in no event will WhenU.com or its agents be liable for any damages arising from the use of or inability to use the software, including, without limitation, damages to users' systems and/or software and/or data, computer failure or malfunction, computer virus transmission, performance delays or communication failures, security breaches or any and all other damages or losses.

Privacy Statement

By downloading the Save/SaveNow software ("the software"), you give permission to WhenU.com ("WhenU") to display relevant contextual information and offers. The software selects which ads and offers to show you based on several factors, including: which Web pages you visit, search terms you use while searching online, content of the Web pages you view and your local zip code (if you have supplied it).

The software protects your privacy by uploading a database of content in small chunks to your desktop and then determining on your desktop whether to retrieve information from WhenU or third-party servers. To protect your privacy, the same database of content is sent to all desktops. Decisions regarding which ads to retrieve to an individual desktop are all processed on the individual user's desktop — and isolated from WhenU servers. In this way, WhenU is able to deliver to you relevant coupons, information and advertisements without sending all of your browsing activity back to WhenU and without establishing any profile about you (even anonymously) on WhenU servers.

Your privacy is also protected in the following manner:

1. Your personally-identifiable information is not required in order to use the software. WhenU does not know your individual identity and does not attempt to discern it in any way.
2. As you surf the Internet, your "clickstream data" (i.e. a log of all the sites you visit) is not transmitted to WhenU or any third party server.
3. WhenU does not assemble any personally-identifiable browsing profiles of you or your individual machine.
4. WhenU does not assemble any anonymous machine-identifiable browsing profile of you or your machine.
5. WhenU does not track which ads and offers you see as an individual user — all of our analysis and tracking of ads is done in the aggregate.

The software does send back a limited amount of information from your desktop in order to count the number of users in our network and optimize the performance and relevancy of the ads. For example, the software may send WhenU a communication that includes information about the webpage you were viewing when you saw or clicked on a particular ad.. WhenU has intentionally designed these communications back to WhenU to be highly protective of user privacy, in the following ways:

a. Each individual desktop is assigned an anonymous, unique machine ID. This machine ID is used only to enable WhenU to count unique, active desktops in the network. The machine ID is not used to determine which ads to serve individual users or to create browsing profiles of users.
b. When ads are requested and/or displayed by the software, impressions and click-throughs, including the factor (e.g., such as the URL, the keyword, or the search term, or some combination thereof) that caused the ad to be displayed are reported to WhenU. To protect your privacy and prevent WhenU or any third party from assembling individual user profiles or knowing which Web sites you visit, your unique machine ID is intentionally excluded from the limited communications sent back to WhenU that may include a URL or such other browsing-specific information.

The Save! software does not place any cookies on your desktop. The Save! software does occasionally make use of session cookies, transient cookies, for the transmission of information between the software’s windows. Session cookies are stored in temporary memory, not retained after the browser is closed, and do not collect information, personal or general, from the user’s computer. It is possible that a third party advertising on our network might place a cookie on your desktop. If you wish to opt-out from third party cookies, please click on the following link and follow the instructions: http://www.networkadvertising.org/optout_nonppii.asp

WhenU.com may update its privacy policy for the software at any time. WhenU is committed to serving highly relevant, contextual coupons and offers, while still providing consumers with industry-leading privacy protection. More information about the software is available here, or for any further questions about our privacy policy please email privacy@whenumail.com.

In add/Remove programs, users can remove Bear and then Save!
Both removed without any issue and and nothing left behind.

1. Bearshear makes takes you to their EULA, you must accept or cancel and then if you accept, it shows WhenU.com ELA. If you accept, you get the install, if not it will not install anything.

Legal bundling software does not create uninstaller for the 3rd party adware they install.

No group that runs bundling software operations gives their codes to paying 3rd party adware clients to remove their software. I see nothing amiss and both in EULA and the installations along with the removal via add/remove programs I find nothing that dictates us detecting them right now.

The free install is a small link with the pay pro version big links so if a user goes and installs it is their own fault as it is clearly advertised what will occur.
supplement added:

said by Mar 7 2005, 09:31 AM:
Also from their EULA:

quote:
...In order to completely remove Save! from your computer, you must uninstall all of the Save!-supported software from your computer....
What that means is if you want to be rid of WhenU.com software, you need to uninstall the software that installed it first. Which makes sense since it is the Bearshare that in order to continue to run would possibly re-install whenU.com if it found it missing since Bearshare is the bundler.

Corrine,

It matters not if there is an EULA in Bearshare for Whenu.

In my post on the Lavasoft site dated Feb 23,2005

WhenU Installs Without Permission

I show that when going to the WhenU site:

Then Downloading their scanner, that during the install, just the simple Act of reading The EULA itself, causes the install of WhenU to begin.

So, the fact remains, this is and was an easily re-creatable FACT.

I would have thought SOMEONE at Lavasoft would have tested this FACT by now, Instead, Lavasoft wants to point to ONE bundle, of Whenu, and say See It says.... and for some reason, not deal with other bundles of Whenu that are not in fact doing same.

It's all DOUBLE SPEAK at this point.

I say again, this is not directed towards you Corrine,

I DID uninstall BearShare, then ran the WhenU Remover I downloaded from Lavasoft's site... THEN ran the scans I posted.

Removing BearShare *AND* running the WhenU Remover and doing as instructed by the Remover to reboot did *NOT* remove the 19 registry entries shown im my posted screen shot.

The removal process DOES NOT remove WhenU. Microsoft Anti-Spyware *DOES* detect & remove the WhenU "items" leftover by the remover.

If ANYONE has the cojones or a guinea pig machine to try it for themselves, PLEASE do.

Thank you for your time Corrine!

yeah i know, lavasoft dropped the ball big time here, and i don't even use it :P, don't see how they can call it a legitimate program when it sits on your computer, saves what websites you visit, analyzes them, and provies popups at random times for stuff you 'may want', as said by this paragraph

haha just noticed it saves what you search for, and somehow i think it'll find your zip code even if you don't provide it :P

Believe me, dadkins, I fully understand that posts are not personally directed toward me. After all, I'm merely a volunteer doing my best to help. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me, but rather am presenting another view as well as any additional information I am at liberty to provide. You all are definitely a "tough crowd" here.

ZOverLord, I recall your post. I do not know what security programs you have on your computer vs any programs installed on the machine used for the analysis I posted above. Thus, who is to say that some other software program prevented the download for that person while they were reading the EULA?

As we all know, there are many facets to any situation. I am fortunate to be in the position where I will be able to test the next build of Ad-Aware SE. In the meantime, it is my opinion that you should not be looking for WhenU to be added back to the Def file at this time since, as was stated in Mike Wood's post on the LS Forums, the decision was made to rewrite the TAC. I can only suppose that, for whatever reason that is beyond any information available to me, the old TAC did not allow continued inclusion.

As I wrote here »Ad-Aware SE Definitions? , the new TAC has to be integrated into the program. This obviously involves re-writing the software code as well as GUI changes.

I look forward to the implementation of the new TAC as it is incorporated into the next build.

Are you talking about this WhenU ht tp://updates.ls-servers.com/whenuremover.zip?
Yep! That is the only "Remover" I could locate on Lavasoft's site.

Great to see you Corrine!

You are so right! And although I am saddened by the way things have been handled by Lavasoft (to date), I continue to use their program and suggest it's use by family, friends and clients. Why? Because it is still a good tool! That part has not changed. I for one will be very happy to see the new TAC implemented in the new version of Ad-Aware.

All of the existing tools out there have their place, including Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware's software is still good and I would never tell anyone not to continue using it in their arsenal. Each tool has its strong and weak points.

However, I believe that unexperienced users will not do things in the proper order when it comes to getting rid of spyware. They really don't have the time to do the research that we (who deal with this day in and day out) have to do in order to get the best overall success at removal of these nasty pests.

I think most folks just want to know that the tool they purchased or have decided to use as their front line tool is worthy of being used as their front line tool and does the best job it can for them.

For me, right now, that is Webroot Spy Sweeper as a front line product set to real time mode. However, I still use Ad-Aware, MS AntiSpyware, and SpyBot S&D, as well as CWShredder on a weekly basis. No one tool will do the job as we all know.

But at least for now, I simply can't suggest that folks use Ad-Aware as their front line spyware removal tool. I truly hope that will change when the new TAC is implemented in the next version of Ad-Aware as it has been the simplist to use overall in the past and rarely caused any issues with computers. In fact, it was the one product I used to suggest as one that would do no harm and anything it does find is safe to allow it to remove without fear of endangering their computer's health.

Here's looking forward to the next version utilizing their new TAC assessment.

When you come down to it, the recommended method for removing WhenU is from PCHell and Symantec:

http://www.pchell.com/support/savenow.shtml
http://sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/adware.whenu.html

Uninstalling Adware.WhenU

A. Do one of the following:

* On the Windows 98 taskbar:
1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

* On the Windows Me taskbar:
1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
If you do not see the Add/Remove Programs icon, click "...view all Control Panel options."

* On the Windows 2000 taskbar:
By default, Windows 2000 is set up the same as Windows 98. In that case, follow the instructions for Windows 98. Otherwise, click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then click Add/Remove Programs.

* On the Windows XP taskbar:
1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, double-click Add or Remove Programs.

B. Locate and click any of the following:
* WhenUSearch
* SaveNow, Save!
* WhenUShop

LilBambi, always a pleasure to see you! I am continually amazed at how small our world really is.

Hi Corrine!
So which is it? Uninstalling the parent program removes WhenU?(which it doesn't)
Or look for the uninstaller in Add and Remove programs(which it was not listed in)?

Side Note: The Uninstaller for BearShare ALSO left a few BearShare entries as well.

No worries either way, I have a couple of programs that DO remove this pest and MANY others. Kaspersky Pro with Extended Bases does NOT like WhenU, and from my previous screenies, neither does Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Thank you Corrine, for your time and effort through all of this!
David
