| RR Fiber?
Just wondering if anyone else has heard of, or has this.. Me and my roomate just signed a lease for a new apartment complex being built across the street from us (we attend UTSA), and apparently RR has given us a direct fiber connection to their office.. Free.. The guy I talked to about it said its rare and usually only offered to businesses. We're supposed to get speeds of 5/1 in each room. I cant even remember what he called it, but I'm excited . Anyways, anyone know what its called?? I've never seen anything like it posted in this forum, or anywhere else really.. so I thought i'd ask. |

1 edit | If this turns out to be true, i've only one thing to say: YOU LUCKY PERSON YOU!
If you truely have 5/1 connections in your place, I'd also like to see what you're billed for it each month.
I pay 134.90 each month for 39.95 worth of cable + DVR box + DVR service and 69.95 for now supposedly 8000/512 of RoadRunner Premium. |

| Yes there is talk of ofering fiber to customers. Its going to be called something other then RR here in a little while. The Idea is to give schools and bussines's more bandwith, the school might have a hand in this some colleges give t3 to each room so just depends.

The college would have a T3, or multiple connections bonded and then have the rooms on a network that it is connected to.
To provide each room with their own T3 would cost more per a month then the students tuition for the year -- Forum Posts:6000 |

| Guys at work talked about it, most of the kids were using it to hosts servers, some where up north. It sounded ridiculus to me as well then I saw some of the bandwidth we give our customers with fiber links doenst seem like its impossible. Plus who knows hows big the dorm was or any other stipulations were involved

Plus the low pings and reliability.. but mainly upload I dont think we're going to get a bill since both the fiber connection and cable are FREE. All I heard was technical problems would go throuh RR as if we had a regular cable connection. Feels kinda cool being the first on this forum to take advantage of this We don't get to move in until August 17 though, so I still have some waiting to do. I just hope ports aren't blocked, although we did have to sign an agreement saying RR could cut us off if they believe we're infected with a worm or what not.. so who knows. |

I'd love to get this for my house. |

I'm in San Antonio close to the UTSA campus. I really didn't ask too many questions about specifics as I was signing papers and filling things out while I was being told about it. He told me what the name of the plan was, but I can't remember it anymore.. Something I had never heard of before. He told us that its basicly a very rare plan that only businesses have been able to even consider at the moment. Time Warner came out and installed a dedicated fiber optic line from our apartments to their office (I have no idea where that is) and only our apartment complex will have access to it. All rooms will have "at least" 5/1mbit connections. No data limits, no restrictions, only that if we're infected with a worm or other malware program Time Warner has the right to shut that onnection down without notice until that computer is clean. Cable is also included free of charge, and Digital Cable is only $5/mo. He said it should be extremely stable and pings shouldnt ever be a problem with little or no downtime. Oh, and I think he said something about not being effected by any overhead... don't know how that works with fiber, but I guess i'll find out. He seemed pretty educated on it and really nice, and he kept telling me how lucky I was lol. I did however ask him why we wouldnt be offered much higher speeds considering the capabilities of fiber, and he said something to the effect of there being no competition a reason, and since this is such a rare package right now, there probably wasn't much thought put into it. He did though say that more people would probably rather sacrifice 5 more mbits download for the 1mbit upload.. which I do agree on. Wish I could get a price as i'm curious as well.. but he nor anyone else could tell me.. all they could say was free.. but from what I can tell its probably not cheap, so if you want this for your home, you're gonna need some deep pockets I'll post a speedtest when I move in, and hopefully you guys won't kill me |

| reply to Kip patterson said by Kip patterson :How many rooms/apartments are there in this building/complex, please? um, I'd say around 40 right now as far as I can tell. Some are 2 bedroom and some are 1 bedroom, so I dont know how many rooms total exactly.

| reply to brandon3003 That sounds a lot like Time Warner Telecom. Its what we switched to at work last year. Ethernet over Fiber is the service we signed up for (I think thats what its called.) Or I guess Ethernet Internet Services (EIS) is the official term.
Basically they run fiber right off the street, into the building and it terminates in your server room into a managed cisco switch/router that they own.
We have a very basic package of 2 MB up & down. The service has worked out very well for us (an office of 70+ users.)
It was neat watching the tech splice the fiber. Was a first for me. |
