He shouldn't have sold it. Wrong move on his part.

That's like burning copies of a cracked version of MS Office 2003 and selling it for considerably less than what it's available for in stores.

Selling something that doesn't belong to you... BIG no no.

Good point, but I'm sticking with my idea about it being a bad idea to sell the stuff.

There is definitely a BIG line between downloading and downloading for resale and distribution. Of course he's going to get canned for that one. Even though the US Court system has forgotten that the 1992 audio home recording act allows for the copying of media that you personally own, under the premise that you do NOT re-sell it. However you can give it to anyone that you want, at least that is what the copyright allegedly states.

Actually copyright doesn't allow you to just give the copies to anyone you want. What it allows is that you can make a backup copy of media that you own but if you give away or sell the original, the copy must go with it or be destroyed.

Technically copyright law doesn't specify this either. As a matter of fact copyright law's only "claim to fame" regarding sharing music is the term "sales and distribution". While this person obviously violated copyright law I still question the validity of the RIAA's other claims.

Nahh I think it was the fact he was selling it for profit that got him in hot water.

I think we beat this redundancy joke to the bitter end. Slashbotters errr slashdotters would be proud

Seriously, selling the stuff is a really bad idea.

If you actually needed someone to tell you that selling w4rez is a bad idea, you probably are the kind of person that would get nabbed stealing a chocolate bar from your local stop and rob.

I've got one friend like that, who actually sells pirated movies ($5-$10), not the smartest apple in the barrel.
