Question on download speed on wireless

My cable modem just upgraded from 3000/256 to 6000/256 so I rebuilt my network. New SB5100 cable modem, New WRT54G router and new mini pci wifi 802.11G card from Dell for the laptop.

On my wired desktop and when I plug my laptop in to the router via wire I get speed tests using nyc.speakeasy.net of 6000-7000 but if I use the wireless only on the laptop I get high 3000's to low 4000's. I do have WPA turned on.

Also to gage things better I start up Netstat Live as it will give you an average of the last minute of network activity. And I download a 50 meg file from »speedtest.rochester.rr.com/. On the desktop I get speeds of 5962 on the laptop wireless I get 4700. But if I download two files at a time on the wireless I get 6100.

Is this normal for a wireless connection?

If I transfer files on my LAN via wireless I get a speed of 20 megs.

Im interested in seeing the answer to this one myself. I have a wired desktop that gets 7000/900 and 3 wireless clients that all average around 4000/900. I for the life of me cant figure this one out. I know there are lots of variables to each setup but like billh491, Im confused. So if anyone can answer billh491's question you may help a lot of other people out too.

I just wish some one would drop by and say ya that's all you get so I know if it is working right. Or let me know what to do to fix it.

It's not fine. If you are connecting at 802.11g speeds, you should be able to get 20-22Mbit speeds, so you should be limited by your DSL line. It sounds like you are connecting at 802.11b speeds. If you are, then it's fine.

If you are using 802.11g with a mix of g and b clients, then you will also drag the whole thing down to b speeds.

Thanks for dropping by. I have set the Wireless Network Mode to G only. Is there anything I should look at in the Advanced Wireless settings? They are all set to default.

Wish I could tell you, I don't have that model. I can point you to the linksys forum here: »Linksys
They can probably help you tweak it up to full speed.

A simple thing to test is the copy speed between two wireless clients, or a wireless client and a local wired client. In all these cases, for a G network you should be seeing well above 10mbit/sec - maybe as high as 20-22mbit/sec depending on signal strength. I use 802.11a for high-speed wireless and get 28-32mbit/sec inside my local network (turbo mode) with it, and 3-4mbit/sec on my backup 802.11b wireless network.

If your local copy throughput is also in the 3-4mbit range, then you've got some config issue with the linksys, or you have some 802.11b device on your network, or it's just plain not working right and is falling back to 802.11b speeds.

Do check over in the linksys forum, and good luck!

I posted this to that forum and did not get much other then asking if I broadcast SSIDs.

On the local network I get 20 megs with no problem.

Ah, see, that is interesting. Then it could be the MTU Size - try setting it slightly lower then 1500, (1480, or 1460) on the wireless router to see if that helps. Because you're getting correct wireless speeds when not going out to the internet.

Well I have fixed it. I ran a test and my RWIN was 17250 they said it should be 56940. So I got Dr TCP and made the change I get full speed of my modem now.

Yeah, but you were getting full speed with this same pc when wired, and not when wireless? The RWIN should not have mattered. I guess I misunderstood - yeah that would be the thing to check first.

I think all 802.11b things should stopped being made altogether. Sometimes 802.11g is even cheaper. And for some people it brings down their overall speed in a mixed place but some routers(i.e. my Belkin F5D7230-4)claim mixed traffic won't lower speeds by that much for 802.11g clients. I haven't tested this though.

JohnInSJ True I got good speed when wired before the change of RWIN I did not connected that fact like you did but the fact is it worked right after I rebooted. I did speed tests and got full speed.

afruff23 reading your post I am not sure what you are getting at but if it is to point out that mixed g and b networks will slow down to b speeds. I am aware of that and have mine set to g only.

I assume you are sitting near the WRT so signal is excellent?

I am not sure if this is present in stock Linksys firmware, but in the Sveasoft firmware there is an option in wireless settings for burst mode that you can enable. If present, try it each way.

Have you also tried transferring from your wired PC to see what kind of speed that gets? Just curious if it's some issue with going through the WAN versus LAN.

I will make this clear. The problem is fixed. I changed the RWIN and now I get full speed of my 6000k modem when I use the wireless card.
