How many hours recording on Dual Tuner DVR?

Hi Everyone,

I just installed the DT DVR I guess its the DCT6412, and I sterted recording some shows I like and already it is 50% full. I thought this DVR could hold more it looks like it can hold only 30 hours? I thought it could hold 60 hours. I am new to this stuff but am I wrong? anyone offer any tips or advice about how many hours?

Thanks Bilas,
NJ

I know I saw a breakdown a little better than this, but the amount you can record depends on the format you record.

"It lets you record up to 60 hours of standard definition programming, and up to 15 hours of HDTV."

I've noticed a one hour HD show takes about 6%. A one hour Digital channel takes only 1% and a one hour analog channel program is about 2%.

Hmm strange I noticed on mine that a 1 hour show takes about 5% to 6% that is digital, I wonder how this is as I don't even use HD. It seems that it is recording it in HD any advice?

Thanks,

Well, only HD channels can record in HD.

For me anything 2-99 are analog. HD runs at 104-113 for my local channels. Digitial the rest of the way, except for an occasional HD channel mixed in.

A one hour digital channel recording should not take 5% to 6%.

You sure you have a DCT6412?

Ok I just checked the menu settings that you set at the begging and it was set up like I was using a HD television. I set it to Pan-scan and 480I would that be the reason? Probably not but I have no clue why it would tape an 1 show on digital about 6%.

Thanks

An hour HD here is 9%, Digital is about 5%, analog about 7%. On the 120gb drive version dct6412.

@Level3.net
Hmm now I am confused. One person says that 1 hour digital on a DCT6412 should be about 5% and another says 1% or 2%? I do have the DCT6412 and it was using about 6% on Digital programs. Strange?

It depends on how much compression is being applied to the channel and that will vary from channel to channel (and from one Comcast system to another). If an hour of standard def digital programming is taking up 6%, they are using a seriously high amount of bandwidth towards that channel. HD programs take almost as much space!

DirecTV, for instance, compresses their standard def programming to around 1.5gb/hour. If Comcast was applying the same amount of compression for their digital channels, you would be able to get almost 90 hours out of that 120GB drive. Each hour would be less than 2% of the drive.

Analog channels require more space, because the encoder built into the box isn't as good as the professional ones that DirecTV and Comcast use, and they aren't compressing from a perfectly clean source. Analog noise like fuzz and snow compress very poorly and wastes a lot of banwidth.

I have the 6412 (120GB HD) and I noticed the other day that it told me it was 90% Full - out of curiosity I counted how many movies I had on there (No Programs). I had 16 and 3 were in HD. NICE! I deleted a few of them to make room for future recordings. Love this DVR!

That does add up for me.

I looked last night. I had (ONE) 2 hour movie from an analog channel, (TWO) 1 hour HD programs, and (THREE) 40 minute programs from a digital channel.

17% Full. (4% +10% + 3%) -- Give or take a little on each type.
