MS updated KB891711 FYI. »www.microsoft.com/technet/securi···002.mspx
Frequently asked questions (FAQ) related to this security update
Why was this security bulletin updated on April 12, 2005?
After the release of the MS05-002 security bulletin, Microsoft became aware of an issue affecting customers deploying the Windows 98, 98SE and ME security update. In most cases, the issue caused machines to unexpectedly restart.
Microsoft has investigated this issue and has made available revised security updates for these platforms. These revised security updates are available from Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Customers who have not yet applied the original version of these updates should visit Windows Update to receive the revised updates.
Customers who have already applied the original Windows 98, 98SE and ME security update are advised to install the current revision of the update from Windows Update.
What updates does this release replace? This security update replaces a prior security bulletin... -- Ant @ The Ant Farm: »antfarm.ma.cx ... Please do not IM/e-mail me for technical support. I was under the impression that it would come back under a different patch number but this clearly states it's a replacement of the original KB891711. -- Write your questions down on the back of a $20 dollar bill and send them to me |

Re: Problem after MS update KB891711 After having all the problems with the first issuance of this fix-I will wait to install this new updated version until I have seen others do it and post that they have had no problems. I too had expected this update to be issued under a new number as that was what was mentioned by microsoft techs previously when they were contacted via PCSAFETY. |

 | reply to captnhook Thanks for the feedback. Have installed the new patch and noted it does not load at start up or show up as a running process. It does show up in Add/Remove programs in Control Panel and I suppose if it causes any grief like the first patch, it could be just removed. |

Just uploaded MS update of KB891711---- Rebooted the machine and have noticed that KB891711 is now running at startup through an msconfig inquiry. I had not loaded the original version of this patch instead I waited for the 02 version. No operating issues as of yet.

 | reply to captnhook Just noticed it is indeed running at startup as per MSCONFIG but not seen when one does control-alt-del |

2 edits | reply to captnhook Well look at what Microsoft can do when they really want to! A revised ..rewritten .. re-released patch that works! No longer is it running as a program task in Task Manager.. no long does it conflict with proxies..different browsers or web filters! ..and no BSOD at least not on this box.. Well done! |
|
 | Just updated...no issues and not running at start-up (Ctrl-Alt-Del).
[BTW I had no issues with the first version either.] |

SUMwarePremium join:2002-05-21 kudos:2 1 edit | reply to captnhook Having endured the agony caused by the previous version of this patch I'm gonna sit this one out a few days and let you sort it out. I'll be very interested in your feedback.
This is a link to the Microsoft Software Forum Network.
One of the posters claims to have modified W98SE (only) OS files to specifically resolve this vulnerability. I cannot vouch for this and have not tried this patch (yet?). But, it might be worth looking at if this can fix the problem without the necessity of an additional running service. |

Hope that the new MS version is swell!
It's just an interesting thread to watch... |
|
 | reply to captnhook I have installed the New release of KB891711 from WU, and so far everything is A-OK. W98SE. Shows in MSCONFIG (and StartUp Cop, of course) but not running per Ctrl>Alt>Del.
I didn't want to run any longer without the Critical Patch.

 | reply to captnhook For those that have installed the first release of this patch, but have it disabled from starting up through msconfig...do we have to first uninstall the orginal or re-enable it in msconfig before applying the revised version?? Please advise. |

Re: KB891711 in registry? I removed the update using ADD/REMOVE (Windows ME) but saw it suggested in some posts that it should also be removed from the registry. Is this recommended or necessary before loading the revised update? If it is where do you find it? I have both RegEdit and RegCleaner available but have to confess I haven't been able to find the proper place to look. Thanks for any input. |
