| [Info] New AOL/AIM TOS.
I wonder if anyone using AIM or AOL have read the new TOS. It bascically lays out that any information you transmit through AIM, can be used in any way AOL sees fit. All this without notifying the user of this. It also states you waive all rights to privacy.
Here are a few links.

| The thing that's not clear, is does this apply if you connect via Trillian or some other multi protocol messenger? I use AIM, but via Trillian. And it makes me wonder if other messenger software makers, Yahoo/MSN, will follow suit? It's kinda scary when you think about it. |

| Yeah makes sense. I was wondering if the info gathered was thru the actual AIM software, but I guess it makes no difference. Really has me rethinking using AIM tho, I mean I don't have really secretive conversations or anything, but the thought that they are keeping, going thru, and using the info seems odd. Why? |

Why not just encrypt all your IMs... then they can waste plenty of time cracking all our omgqtfbbqrofl messages... if all else fails, try ICQ, since it works on the AIM network, maybe ICQ's TOS havent changed. |

It doesn't matter what client you use. As long as you are Im'ing someone on the AIM network your message is still passing through the network.
If you don't like this the only thing you can do is direct connect to the user.
Once direct connected, your info no longer passes to AOL, in fact for fun, direct connect to someone via AIM and then sign off AIM. You will still be able to use direct connect just fine because the info is going client - client, versus how it normally goes, client - server - client -- Forum Posts:6000 |

1 edit | reply to Optimized said by Optimized :Does anyone know how the TOS read prior to the changes? Well supposedly this is an archive dating back to February 6, 2004.
However, if you read the current version and the archive, they both contain this piece:
quote: In addition, by posting Content on an AIM Product, you grant AOL, its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, agents and licensees the irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide right to reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote this Content in any medium. You waive any right to privacy. You waive any right to inspect or approve uses of the Content or to be compensated for any such uses.
Could it be possible that it was in the TOS this whole time? We know that people don't normally read the EULA, and they similarly blow off the TOS.
Either that or the archive is wrong or I'm just not seeing something. |

| reply to JamesHutto All I have to say is I am glad I don't have anything to do with any of their crap anymore including AIM.I had them a few years ago and I was so tired of fixing my computer all the time from their ever controlling software.Sorry if it sounds like maybe I am trolling but I just had to vent.I wasted a lot of time an money trying to get out of the grips of these people.Nuff said;) P.S. They are evil and this proves it. -- "The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is." |

| reply to xeo said by xeo : Well supposedly this is an archive dating back to February 6, 2004. It would seem that the one you reference would include some of the updated language since they state:
"The following terms and conditions apply to all users who either registered for AIM services or downloaded AIM updates or software on or after February 5, 2004."
It seems that is dated right after the cutoff they mention.
I'm not very sure, thus why I asked.
Thanks for the additional info though, it is appreciated. -- Chilly likes it |
