Re: Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 Update 2.

OK, thanks!

I sure am glad I'm retired, as keeping all the bad guys out of the family PCs, is a FULL time job!!

Thanks,
Mike

Yes i do have it disabled in IE. I might allow it in TrustedZone, only on occasions and even then on high security.

Do you also disable Java in IE?

If I remove them from plugin folder then they don't appear in the list. I have always blamed it on non standard FF install folder and using .zip rather than installer to install FF (the latter sets the needed reg entries)

What i had to do was to copy the following from
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin
NPJava11.dll
NPJava12.dll
NPJava13.dll
NPJava14.dll
NPJava32.dll
NPJPI150_02.dll
NPOJI610.dll
into Firefox's plugin folder to make Java work
I noticed that the above listed dlls were not in my plugins folder either. But I didn't bother to copy them over. That's when I made my observation about checking/unchecking "Enable Java". Perhaps this new version of Java doesn't require FF to physically hold the dlls within the plugins folder. Or perhaps it's an install error.

Now I'm curious Cudni. If you temporarily remove the dlls from the FF plugins folder, do you then get the same 'toggled' display listing?

In Firefox under Tools > Options > Web Features:

With the new Java install (and deleting previous Java versions) if "Enable Java" is selected the plugins will be displayed in FF "about : plugins".

If "Enable Java" is not selected then the Java plugins will not be displayed.

4.
Yes Java and JavaScript are not the same
»www.htmlgoodies.com/beyond/javas···/3470971

3.
You have to remove the previous version using Add/Remove progs because the new install will not do it for you. Not because the installer is lazy but because some people might need several Java versions

2.
You're correct, FF is not Mozilla.
I usually use full installer 15Mb from
»javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Wel···Id=noreg

if you type in address bar in FF about: plugins it will list you all installed plugins

I want to upgrade my old JRE (1.4.2_06-b03) to J2SE (1.5.x), and I'm sooooo confused! :(

(I'm running XP/SP2 with all M$soft patches, and Windows Scripting Host is not installed.)

I'm using my default browser, Firefox 1.0.1, and I have JRE installed...
C:\TEMP>java -version
java version "1.4.2_06"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_06-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_06-b03, mixed mode)

When I go here »java.com/en/, there is a yellow/orange button on the right side of the page that says, "Java Software Download". When I click on that button, I get a yellow bar across the top of FF that says, "Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page.", and a button that says, "Install Missing Plugins".

When I "View > Page Source", it appears to me, there is JavaScript code (.js) and JavaScript Source Code (.jsp).

When I "Tools > Options > Web Features", both "Enable Java" & "Enable JavaScript" are checked.

QUESTION #1: So, how can I see exactly what missing plugin FF wants/needs/calls/uses ?

The "Installation Instructions" here »java.com/en/download/help/5000010100.xml, says, "Automatic download" is for "Internet Explorer" & "Mozilla 1.4, Netscape 7/7.1 (Not Officialy Supported)".

QUESTION #2: FF is not Mozilla 1.x... Right?

The "Manual Instructions" says, "This process downloads an IFTW (Install From The Web) executable program ... and requires minimum user intervention. ..."

QUESTION #3: So, if I do a manual install, "it" will automagically remove JRE (1.4.2_06-b03), install J2SE (1.5.x), and when I look at the "Add or Remove Programs" list, I will see only one version of Java installed? "Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06" will be replaced with "something v1.5.something". Right?

QUESTION #4: Java and JavaScript are not the same, and are from two different companies: Sun & Netscape. Right?

Mike
